Starlink Wi-Fi in Flight: Lufthansa launches high-speed…

There is big news for passengers troubled by slow internet during air travel. Germany’s Lufthansa Airlines has launched high-speed Wi-Fi service based on SpaceX’s Starlink satellite network in one of its Airbus A320neo from 19 August 2026. This marks the beginning of a major expansion of in-flight connectivity for Lufthansa Group. The company plans to connect about 850 aircraft of its group with Starlink technology by 2029.

The new facility debuted on Lufthansa’s Airbus A320neo. The aircraft took off on flight LH234 from Frankfurt to Rome on August 19 and it was during this flight that the new Wi-Fi service was made available to passengers. Lufthansa Group has thus launched the first phase of Starlink high-speed Internet in its commercial passenger operations.

Starlink Wi-Fi will reach 850 aircraft

Lufthansa Group aims to make this technology available in its approximately 850 aircraft in a phased manner. According to the company, the group plans to provide this connectivity in the aircraft of all major airlines by 2029. Apart from Lufthansa, SWISS, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, ITA Airways, Edelweiss, Discover Airlines, Air Dolomiti, Lufthansa City Airlines and Eurowings are also preparing for the rollout of this technology. This means that Lufthansa Group passengers can experience faster in-flight internet across different routes and airlines for years to come.

The company says that with the Starlink based connection, internet browsing as well as high-bandwidth tasks can be done more easily in the aircraft. Emphasis is being placed on improving usage for passengers such as cloud-based work, online services and streaming.

Passengers will not have to pay for Wi-Fi

The special thing about Lufthansa’s new service is that it is being made available free of cost to some eligible passengers. Miles & More loyalty program members and Travel ID users will be able to use this high-speed internet at no extra charge. This facility is part of the plan to be made available in all travel classes.

To use it, passengers need to put their device on flight mode in the aircraft and then select the “Lufthansa Group Wi-Fi” network in the Wi-Fi option. After this the connection can be completed through the login portal.

There will be some rules along with fast internet

The new Wi-Fi service is aimed at giving passengers a better online experience, but the airline has also set some rules for its use. Passengers have been asked to use headphones while watching audio and video content, so that passengers sitting nearby are not disturbed. Apart from this, voice calls and video calls will not be allowed.

Live streaming from aircraft will also be banned. Lufthansa Group says that these rules have been prepared keeping in mind the feedback of passengers and their preferences.

Currently the facility will not be available on every flight

Although the rollout of Starlink Wi-Fi has begun, the service is currently available only on select Lufthansa Group aircraft. Therefore, passengers will not get this facility immediately in every flight. The company is working towards providing such information on its digital platform in the coming time, so that passengers can know before booking whether Starlink Wi-Fi is available in the plane in which they are going to travel or not.
