New Delhi: Indian benchmark indices opened lower on August 18 as renewed geopolitical tensions, rising crude oil prices and continued foreign investor selling impacted market sentiment.
The BSE Sensex dropped 259.77 points, or 0.33 per cent, to trade at 77,468.39 in early deals. The NSE Nifty declined 53.50 points, or 0.22 per cent, to 24,233.75, slipping below the 24,300 mark.
Iran-US Tensions Push Crude Oil Above $91
One of the biggest concerns for investors was the sharp rise in crude oil prices. Brent crude crossed the $91 per barrel mark amid renewed tensions between Iran and the US.
Analysts warned that sustained higher oil prices could increase inflationary pressure in India, which imports a large share of its energy requirements.
Rising crude prices could impact inflation, the current account balance and corporate earnings, making investors cautious.
FII Selling Adds Pressure On Indian Markets
Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) continued selling pressure in domestic equities. FIIs sold shares worth ₹2,535 crore on Monday, adding to concerns over market liquidity.
Experts said higher US bond yields and global uncertainty could impact foreign fund flows into emerging markets like India.
Top Gainers And Losers
Among Nifty stocks, Bajaj Auto, ONGC, SBI, Grasim and Axis Bank were among the top gainers.
On the other hand, Max Healthcare, InterGlobe Aviation, Asian Paints, Infosys and Jio Financial Services were among the biggest losers during early trading.
Asian Markets Remain Under Pressure
Global markets also reflected cautious sentiment. Japan's Nikkei 225 declined sharply, while Hong Kong's Hang Seng and China's Shanghai Composite traded lower.
South Korea's Kospi also slipped after giving up early gains. Australia's benchmark index remained one of the few positive markets in the region.
Analysts Expect Volatility To Continue
Market experts said uncertainty due to geopolitical developments may keep Indian equities volatile in the near term.
However, strong domestic economic conditions and expectations of improved earnings growth could provide support. Analysts suggested investors may consider market dips as opportunities for long-term investment in quality stocks.
