Strict action in Iran for singing without hijab, female singer sentenced to 74 lashes
Once again shocking news regarding human rights and sanctions has come out from Iran. A famous female singer here has had to pay a heavy price for wearing a sleeveless dress and not keeping hijab on her head during a live concert. Taking a tough stand in this case, the court has sentenced Iranian singer Parastu Ahmadi to 74 lashes. Not only this, she has also been banned from leaving the country for the next two years, which means she will not be able to go out of Iran for the next 24 months.
Actually, this whole matter is said to be about two years old, on which the court there has now given its verdict. The surprising thing is that the punishment has not only fallen on Parastu Ahmadi, but 8 other artists working with him will also have to face this hunter of law. Since this decision, people’s anger has erupted on social media against the Iranian government and its draconian laws.
What is the whole matter and why was he given such a painful punishment?
The roots of the case lie in the last months of the year 2024. According to local people and media reports, in December 2024, Parastu Ahmadi performed a live concert on YouTube. During this concert, he sang a very popular patriotic song of Iran ‘Aj Khoone Jawanane Watan’. In the video, the singer was seen without hijab and wearing a sleeveless dress.
As soon as this video went viral on social media, Iran’s morality police and security agencies became active. Soon after, Iranian singer Parastu Ahmadi and his fellow artists were detained. Although at that time he was released on bail after initial interrogation, the legal investigation against him for uploading the video on the internet continued. Now after two years, this shocking decision of the court has come in this case.
Court admitted violation of ‘public decency’
A court in Iran’s Qom province, hearing the case, convicted Singer and his team. The court said in its decision that Parastu Ahmadi had seriously violated ‘public decency’ by performing without hijab and in sleeveless clothes. Apart from this, he has also been accused of promoting and publishing obscene content through the internet.
The punishment decided by the court is very strict. Singer and all the 8 people working with him will be given 74 lashes each. Along with this, he has been completely banned from participating in any kind of artistic activity for the next 2 years. This means that these artists will neither be able to record any new song nor be a part of any show for two years.
The laws in Iran regarding women’s dress and hijab have always been very strict, but the punishment of flogging for singing a patriotic song like this has shocked the world. People on social media are calling it murder of freedom of expression. At present, after this decision, a new debate has started among human rights organizations inside and outside Iran whether such restrictions on art and music are justified?
