After Thursday’s sharp decline, the Indian stock market staged a spectacular comeback on Friday, October 9, bringing smiles back to investors’ faces. By market close on the last trading day of the week, the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) Sensex closed with a gain of around 880 points. At the same time, the National Stock Exchange (NSE) Nifty managed to cross 22,500. Strong buying in the IT, FMCG and banking sectors played a major role in the market’s strong recovery towards the end of the session.
At the end of the trading session, major market indices closed in the green. The Sensex closed at 72,472, a strong gain of 879 points or 1.23 percent. Meanwhile, the Nifty rose 289 points or 1.30 percent to 22,520. The overall market sentiment also remained very positive. A total of 2,344 stocks rose, while 1,686 stocks fell. Meanwhile, India VIX, reflecting volatility in the market, fell 6.09% to around 14.00, indicating stability in the market.
Sector wise performance shows that almost all major indices closed in the green today. The largest increase was seen in the IT sector at 3.02% (3.31%). Further, Nifty FMCG rose 2.25%, Nifty PSU Bank 1.62% and Nifty Services 1.79%. The midcap index gained 1.46% and the smallcap index gained 0.55%.
