New Delhi, 21 August 2026: The Central Government has taken a major step to withdraw the police complaints registered against students during the massive student agitation and protests held across the country in the month of July regarding paper leak and other issues. The Central Government has decided to file a special application in the Supreme Court, through which, using the special power under Article 142 of the Constitution, an appeal will be made to cancel all the FIRs against the protesting students. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta presented these cases before the bench headed by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant on Monday and demanded an early hearing.
This step is also very important because CJP has announced to organize a huge protest march again in Delhi on 5th September. Earlier, as per the discussion held after the July agitation, there was a demand to withdraw the cases against the students. Now, with this step of the Central Government, it is being expressed that there is a possibility of a happy end to this dispute. As per legal procedure, once a police complaint is filed, the government cannot directly cancel it. After completing the investigation, the police have to submit the closure report before the Magistrate, whether to accept it or not is within the jurisdiction of the court. To avoid this long and complicated process and to provide speedy justice to the students, the help of Article 142 of the Supreme Court which gives 'complete justice' is being taken.

Who will get relief and who will not?
In the earlier hearing, it was clarified by the government that this relief is only for the students doing general protest. The legal investigation against 2873 people involved in murder, rape, kidnapping and other serious crimes during the protest will remain the same. The government's stance is that the cases should be closed keeping in mind the future of innocent students, but legal action should continue against anti-social elements. Now everyone's eyes are on the next hearing of the Supreme Court and the decisions to be taken before the march on 5th September.
