Success Story: When it comes to big pharmaceutical companies of India, Lupine’s name figures prominently. But this company was not started by any big business family or huge investment. Behind this was chemistry professor Desh Bandhu Gupta, who made the idea of science, social responsibility and affordable treatment the basis of business.
Born on 8 February 1938 in Rajgarh in Alwar district of Rajasthan, Gupta was the eldest of five siblings. Coming from an ordinary family background, Gupta obtained a master’s degree in Chemistry and later became a professor at BITS Pilani. He did not have experience in running a business, but he did have a keen ability to understand science and the health needs of people.
An incident changed my thinking
An incident from Gupta’s childhood left a deep impact on his mind. It was not easy to reach the hospital when someone in the family became ill or injured. Limited resources and lack of health facilities forced him to think why better treatment should be out of reach of common people. This question later became a part of his business philosophy. Good medicines should be accessible to every person, not just the rich.
The journey started with Rs 5,000 from the wife.
In 1968, Gupta founded Lupine in Mumbai. The beginning was very simple. He borrowed Rs 5,000 from his wife Manju Gupta and started the company with limited resources. Initially, Lupine focused on the production of folic acid and iron tablets for India’s maternal and child health programmes. After this the company saw a big opportunity in TB medicines. Lupine developed its expertise in an area where many big companies had limited interest at that time. The TB medicines business gave a strong base to the company and opened the way to further reach international markets.
Small company to global pharma brand
Over time, Lupine expanded beyond TB into cardiovascular, diabetes, asthma, pediatrics, gastro-intestinal and anti-infective drugs. The company also increased its presence in areas like generic drugs, API and biosimilars. Gupta laid emphasis on quality and international regulatory standards from the beginning. This strategy helped Lupine to make a place in many big global markets including America.
What lesson can we learn from Gupta’s story?
The success of Desh Bandhu Gupta is not just a story of the company’s large size or wealth. It shows that with scientific knowledge, correct identification of the problem and sticking to one objective for a long time, a big business can be built despite limited resources. The name Lupine is also considered a symbol of this thinking. Lupine is a wild flower, which is known to grow and improve even difficult soils. Gupta’s journey was also similar.
