Nagoya, Sept 22:
Indian boxer Sumit Kundu made a confident start to his Asian Games campaign, defeating Thailand’s experienced Bunjong Sinsiri by a unanimous 5-0 decision in the opening round of the men’s 70kg category in Nishio, Japan.
Kundu produced his strongest display in the final round to complete a convincing victory and book his place in the pre-quarterfinals. He will next meet Iraq’s Ali Qasim Hamdan Al-Sarra.
Kundu said the strategy worked well against Sinsiri, whom he had faced at several events earlier. The Indian boxer, who missed out on a medal at last month’s Commonwealth Games, has set his sights on the gold medal at the Asian Games.
India have fielded an 11-member boxing squad comprising six men and five women. Indian boxers had won four medals at the previous edition of the Asian Games, including one silver and three bronze.
