Meanwhile, former Indian captain Sunil Gavaskar has given an important warning for the next Chief Selector. Gavaskar said in his column that it is a great honor to be the chairman of the national selection committee, but this post also comes with criticism. According to him, 9 good decisions taken by the selectors are forgotten and one alleged mistake is multiplied and brought into discussion again and again.
Gavaskar mentioned another thing inside the selection process. He said- Many times a decision can be taken under the pressure of other selectors, but the chairman has to answer it in front of the media. In such a situation, he also becomes the biggest target of criticism.
Sharing the experience of his playing days, the former Indian captain said that earlier captains also used to be a part of the selection meetings, although they did not have the right to vote. According to Gavaskar, sometimes the selectors would talk to their favorite media people and put the blame on the captain for controversial selections or exclusion of players. He said that this had happened to him many times, but his teammates had faith in his honesty.
Gavaskar directly cautioned the next chairman, saying that no matter how great his reputation as a player is, after the selector’s tenure ends, more negative than positive things can be associated with his name, even if some of those perceptions are wrong.
Agarkar took over the responsibility of chief selector in July 2023. During his tenure, India reached the final of the 2023 ODI World Cup and won the 2024 T20 World Cup and 2025 Champions Trophy. During this time, important decisions related to the international careers of big names like Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and Ravichandran Ashwin were also taken.
Now the new chairman will have a big responsibility for the next round of selection process of the Indian team. Especially in view of the 2027 ODI World Cup, his role will be important. The name of the new Chief Selector will be revealed only after the official decision of BCCI.
