Sunny Deol’s ‘Suryaa’ gets releif as Delhi HC turns down second plea

Delhi High Court has refused to entertain a PIL seeking a stay on the release of Sunny Deol’s Suryaa: Ant Se Aarambh Tak, which is set to hit theatres on November 20.

A bench of Acting Chief Justice Nitin Wasudeo Sambre and Justice Sanjay Sharma heard the plea on Wednesday.

The court said the doctor fraternity has already raised the same issue in another writ petition, which is pending before a single judge. That judge issued notice to the authorities on November 2, and the matter is listed for November 16.

“We see no reason for multiplicity of proceedings,” the bench said, even if these petitioners are also doctors.

The PIL was filed by Dr Nachiketa Bhatia and Dr Dhruv Chauhan. They argued that the trailer shows violence against doctors as heroic and unfairly paints private hospital doctors as corrupt.

Their lawyer said the teaser gives the impression that patients’ relatives can now turn violent against medical staff, and he argued that a PIL has wider scope than a writ petition.

The court told them they can join the proceedings before the single judge and are free to pursue their representation before the authorities.

CBFC’s counsel told the court that the film has not been certified yet and the matter is still under consideration.

He also said the Hindi film is a remake of a South Indian movie that is already in the public domain.
