Supreme Court: On recent incidents of sexual abuse of women and minor girls in Delhi-NCR By the Supreme Court Serious concern has been expressed. Justice J. B. Pardiwala and Justice K. The case is being heard before the bench of Vinod Chandran. The court had already taken cognizance of these incidents on its own.

During the hearing, the court emphasized on setting up effective mechanisms to prevent crimes for women's safety instead of taking action only after the incident. Every woman in Delhi should feel safe walking on the streets or traveling in metro and road transport even at 10 pm, the bench told the central government and the Delhi Police. The court also noted that preventive action is necessary in such a way as to create fear of the law among potential criminals.

The court took notice

In this case, the court has taken cognizance of the incidents of gang rape of a minor girl in Astha Kunj Park in Delhi, gang rape and murder of a teenager in Swaroop Nagar and sexual assault of a minor girl in a sleeper bus coming from Greater Noida to Delhi. The court had earlier expressed concern that the sleeper bus could not be stopped despite covering a distance of about 47 km.

The court order has mentioned that there have been complaints about security in the Astha Kunj Park area in the past. The court has raised questions about the lack of adequate patrolling and monitoring of Lady Shriram College students after earlier complaints of sexual harassment.

Increase police patrols

Earlier in its September 28 order, the Supreme Court had directed identification of sensitive places, increased police patrolling, lighting and CCTVMeasures such as audits, inspection of vehicles and effective mechanisms for citizen complaints were emphasized. A report has also been sought from the concerned authorities regarding these measures.

The court had earlier also noted painful similarities with the 2012 Nirbhaya case while referring to the sleeper bus incident. The court clarified that women and girls have a fear-free environment in public places as part of their constitutional right to live with dignity.
