Suspense of power continues in Tamil Nadu: Vijay again reached Raj Bhavan, Governor said – ‘Bring 118 MLAs only then…
Chennai. The political turmoil regarding government formation in Tamil Nadu has intensified, but the picture of power is still not clear. TVK chief Vijay once again reached Raj Bhavan and met Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar. However, even after this meeting, there remains uncertainty regarding government formation.
According to sources, the Governor has given a clear indication that government formation cannot be allowed only on the basis of being the largest party. He has clarified that it will be mandatory to show the support of 118 MLAs required to prove majority in the 234-member Assembly.
TVK becomes the largest party, but far from majority-
In the assembly elections held on April 23, TVK performed brilliantly and achieved the status of the largest party by winning 108 seats. However, Vijay has won from two seats and as per the rules he will have to give up one seat. In such a situation, the actual number of the party will remain 107.
Congress’s support, yet the data is incomplete-
Amidst efforts to form the government, Congress decided to break away from the DMK alliance and support TVK. Five Congress MLAs came out in support of Vijay, taking TVK’s tally to 112. But the party is still six seats short of the magic majority figure of 118.
This is the reason why the Governor has not taken any decision regarding the swearing in at present.
Vijay presented claim, but Raj Bhavan asked for clear majority-
On Wednesday, Vijay had staked claim to form the government with the letter of support from Congress. The next day he again reached Raj Bhavan. It is believed that during this period the mathematics of gathering support and government formation were discussed.
Although no official statement has been issued by the Raj Bhavan yet, sources say that the Governor has made it clear that mere letters of support or verbal claims will not be enough. To ensure a stable government, the clear support of 118 MLAs will be necessary.
TVK’s claim – the process will move forward soon –
Meanwhile, TVK leader VS Babu said that the process of government formation can move forward soon. However, he refused to comment on questions related to pressure from the central government.
This ongoing suspense in the politics of Tamil Nadu may now take a new turn in the next few days, because all eyes are now fixed on the majority figures and the next step of the Raj Bhavan.
