Tata Motors has launched the new Aeris sedan in India with ex-showroom prices ranging from Rs. 5.29 lakh to Rs. 9.19 lakh. It replaces the Tigor in the carmaker’s India lineup and competes with the likes of Maruti Dzire and Honda Amaze. Design is one of the biggest strengths of the Aeris. Tata wanted it to look distinctive and it actually does. Here are a few images of the sub-compact sedan.
The Aeris belongs to the sub-four metre sedan segment. It is 3995 mm long, 1684 mm wide and 1532mm tall. The ground clearance is 170mm, and the vehicle has a wheelbase of 2450mm. According to Tata Motors, one of the key objectives was to maximise the car’s footprint even while staying inside these dimensions.
The Aeris is a good-looking sedan. But more importantly, it stays out of the shadow of the Tigor with its design. There is some sense of familiarity to it. That said, there is minimal similarity between the designs of the two. The only resemblance you would notice would be the sloping roofline.
Let’s jump into the details of this design. The front end looks fresh and good. The front bumper has two C-shaped design elements flanking the lower grille section. A closed-off Black grille section connects the LED headlamps which come with LED DRLs, and are automatic. The Tata logo is positioned at the centre of this strip. This is a cue we also get to see on the latest Tiago. The LED fog lamps are placed on either ends of the lower grille section.
In most areas of the Aeris, we get to see clean panels and neatly drawn body lines. There overall design looks cohesive and confident.
In the side view, the Aeris may remind some of the Tigor. For most, the resemblance will be with the Curvv, Tata’s own SUV coupe. (This increases as we move towards the rear.) The 15-inch diamond-cut aero alloy wheels would instantly catch your eyes when viewed from the sides. The car also gets textured wheel-arch cladding, shark-fin antenna and pull-type door handles with Chrome accents.
At the rear, we can see a fastback style tail section with a ducktail-like element on the hatch lid, connected LED tail lamps, and a rear bumper that, once again, has C-shaped design cues. The boot lid looks clean and smooth, and the number plate sits on the rear bumper. According to manufacturer claims, the Aeris’ boot can accommodate 419 litres. More importantly, the lid’s hinges have been designed in a way that they don’t eat into the usable boot space when the lid is closed.
Overall, Tata Motors has given the Aeris a sharper, more modern design. The Tigor, in comparison, had a more conventional and rounded styling.
The colour palette is another interesting aspect of the Aeris. As we know, most offerings in this segment offer conventional colours. Tata Motors has decided to take a sharp detour on that front and offers the Aeris in six interesting colours, including some unconventional shades. The available options are Daytona Grey, Pristine White, Dune Glow, Pure Grey, Nitro Crimson and Dandeli Drizzle.
The Dandeli Drizzle is the most unique of the lot and goes well with the design of the car. How the colours of Tata cars and SUVs have been evolving in the recent past is indeed interesting. Even with the new Tiago and Sierra.EV, we had seen the introduction of some new, radical shades.
The Aeris comes in five broad trims- Smart, Pure, Pure+, Creative and Accomplished. The cabin design is also new. On the top-spec variant, it looks very modern and elegant. There is a strong focus on using sustainable materials and attractive textures inside. The interior design is inspired by that of the updated Tiago. The interior has a two-tone colour scheme. The sedan also gets a new, two-spoke steering wheel and a digital instrument cluster.
The Aeris comes with leatherette upholstery and ventilated front seats. Other features include a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system with a six-speaker audio system, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, 360-degree camera, dashcam, wireless charger, connected car features, rear AC vents, automatic headlamps, and 65W Type-C USB ports.
The safety suite includes six airbags, ABS with EBD, blind-spot monitor, electronic stability control and a tyre pressure monitoring system.
The Aeris is based on the X-ALPHA platform, shared with the new Tiago. It is available with two powertrain options- 1.2-litre naturally aspirated three-cylinder petrol and CNG. Both are available with manual and automatic transmissions. The automatic variants come with paddle shifters and the CNG guise gets a twin-cylinder CNG storage setup. Tata Motors has also improved the suspension and steering of the new Aeris.
