Tata Motors Tops India’s Electric Car Market: Mahindra, MG At #2 And #3

Indian car manufacturer Tata has been serious about EVs since the very beginning. The company has been aggressive when it comes to expanding its lineup, and that has helped make the brand popular among EV buyers. Tata currently has one of the largest electric vehicle portfolios in the country, and in the coming months, it is only expected to expand further. Tata became the best-selling electric vehicle brand in the market in May 2026.

Tata Motors topped the chart by selling 10,231 EVs in the market. As mentioned above, Tata is one of the largest Indian players in this segment, and models such as the Tiago EV, Tigor EV, Punch EV, Nexon EV, Harrier EV, and Curvv EV contributed to these sales figures. What makes this achievement special is that this is the first time Tata’s EV sales have crossed the 10,000-unit mark. Tata Punch EV and Nexon EV continue to be the volume drivers for Tata.

The reason Tata manages to hold the top position is because of several factors. It has a wide variety of products in the EV segment. There are affordable electric hatchbacks for buyers on a tight budget, and for those looking for an electric SUV, there are multiple options available as well. This variety, combined with aggressive pricing, has helped Tata Motors achieve this milestone. In the coming months, Tata is expected to retain its position, as the company is planning to introduce electric versions of the Sierra and Safari.

Tata currently holds 34.75 percent of the EV market share and also recorded a 102 percent year-on-year growth compared to May last year.

The first and second positions are both occupied by Indian brands. The brand in second place is Mahindra. It managed to sell 6,133 EVs in the market last month, which is also Mahindra’s highest-ever EV sales figure. This pushed JSW MG Motor to third place.

The best-selling model from Mahindra is the XEV 9S. Mahindra sold 3,242 units of the XEV 9S last month. The BE 6, XUV 3XO EV, and XEV 9E also contributed to this success. Mahindra recorded a 96 percent year-on-year growth in EV sales.
