Tata Sierra.EV’s All Wheel Drive System Confirmed Through Fresh Teaser

Tata Motors has just put out a fresh teaser for the upcoming Sierra.EV. The electric version of the SUV will be launched on the 30th of June, at Mumbai. The teaser shows the Sierra.EV taking a detour, with the terrain rapidly shifting from road to sand. And one of the frames clearly shows an all wheel drive or QWD badge, confirming that the Sierra.EV will be the second electric car from Tata Motors to feature an all wheel drive layout after the Harrier.EV.

Until recently, all-wheel drive was largely absent from mainstream Indian EVs. But Tata now seems determined to change that by expanding dual-motor technology beyond the Harrier.ev and into more lifestyle-oriented products.

The teaser itself does not reveal technical specifications. However, it strongly hints at a two-motor configuration – one electric motor mounted on the front axle and another on the rear axle. This setup allows torque to be distributed to all four wheels electronically, without the need for a mechanical prop shaft.

Expect better acceleration, stronger highway performance and improved capability on loose or slippery surfaces. Instant torque delivery to both axles can also make the SUV feel noticeably more responsive compared to a single-motor front-wheel-drive setup.

Tata has already demonstrated what this architecture can do with the Harrier.ev. The Harrier electric SUV uses Tata’s acti.ev Plus platform and is available with multiple battery pack choices – 65 kWh and 75 kWh – depending on variant. Current expectations are that the Sierra.EV will follow a similar strategy rather than offering a single battery size across the range.

That means buyers could see lower variants with a smaller battery and single-motor configuration, while higher trims may bring larger battery packs and the headline-grabbing dual-motor AWD system.

But if Tata carries over lessons from the Harrier.ev programme, the Sierra.EV could target both range-focused buyers and performance-oriented customers through variant differentiation.

The Sierra name itself carries a lot of emotional value for Tata. The original Sierra was one of India’s earliest lifestyle SUVs and developed a cult following over the years. The modern revival aims to blend that heritage with a completely new electric identity.

Visually, the Sierra.EV is expected to retain the upright stance, distinctive greenhouse and retro-inspired cues that made the concept stand out. At the same time, Tata appears ready to position it as a more premium and more adventurous alternative within its EV portfolio.

If Tata gets the pricing and battery strategy right, this could become one of the most interesting electric launches coming to India. Watch this space as we bring you all the action from the launch event of the Sierra.EV at Mumbai on the 30th of June.
