During parliamentary proceedings, Telugu Desam Party (TDP) Rajya Sabha member Chintakayala Vijay called for expedited trial proceedings concerning political leaders, emphasising that the rule of law should apply equally to both ordinary citizens and public office holders.
He pointed out that numerous criminal cases against political figures have remained unresolved for over a decade due to frequent judicial transfers and a shortage of judges. The MP urged the government to enhance the capacity of Special CBI Courts to address this issue.
Chintakayala Vijay stated, “The law is equal for everyone, regardless of whether a person holds public office or is an ordinary citizen.”
On Wednesday, he expressed concerns in Parliament about delays in resolving criminal cases involving public representatives, advocating for strengthening Special CBI Courts to achieve timely justice and maintain public confidence in the judicial system.
Citing the example of former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister and YSRCP President YS Jagan Mohan Reddy, the MP noted that approximately 31 criminal cases have been filed against him since 2013, with nearly 13 years having passed since their initiation.
He further explained that discharge petitions in these cases have been heard by about eight different judges over the years but, due to frequent judicial transfers and judge shortages, have yet to receive a final decision.
Questioning the judicial process duration, the MP asked, “If discharge petitions alone take 13 years, when will the actual trial be completed?”
He highlighted that prolonged judicial proceedings damage public trust in the justice delivery mechanism and called on the government to expand the capacity of Special CBI Courts to enable the speedy disposal of cases involving public figures.
Chintakayala Vijay concluded by stating that such delays undermine public faith in the rule of law and the justice system.
