According to Google’s official data, since its launch in the year 2021, this revolutionary system has so far successfully sent more than 1 billion earthquake alerts worldwide. The company claims this is the world’s largest smartphone-based earthquake detection network. Recent expansion has also brought several other new countries under this protection, including Panama and Guatemala.
Seconds of early warning help save lives
Google CEO Sundar Pichai specifically mentioned the recent earthquake in Venezuela while announcing the expansion of the system on social media platform X. He explained that thanks to this technology, millions of people far away from the epicenter of the earthquake received timely alerts before they felt the tremors, allowing them to move to safety. Google believes that even just 2 to 5 seconds of advance warning can save precious lives in an emergency.
What revolutionary security features have been added in the new Alert?
The company is going to add the following new features to its “Be Prepared” alerts in the coming months:
Shaking Radius Map: A live map of how far the shaking is spread will be displayed.
Magnitude Estimation: Accurate information will be given about the probable magnitude and aftershocks of an earthquake.
Safety measures: Guidelines on what immediate safety measures to take as per the situation will appear on the screen.
Diffuse Link Button: A special button will take the user directly to the next step to get more detailed and updated guidance.
Android Earthquake Alert System works in 3 phases
This system, which works with the help of sensors (accelerometers) in smartphones, works in 3 categories depending on the severity:
Be Aware: Gives notifications for light vibration and normal shaking conditions.
Be Prepared: Alerts users immediately during moderate to severe tremors.
Take Action: This alert appears in full-screen mode with a siren during strong tremors and devastating earthquakes and prompts people to hide under tables or go outdoors.
