‘Tell agencies before media’, Supreme Court tells both sides in Twisha case
Madhya Pradesh’s famous Tvisha Sharma case has now reached the Supreme Court. Taking suo motu cognizance, the Supreme Court on Monday said it is troubled by the way the Tvisha Sharma death case was investigated and handled. The Supreme Court asked the media to exercise restraint while reporting the developments related to this case.
Tvisha Sharma was found hanging on May 12 at her in-laws’ house in Katara Hills area of Bhopal. His age was 33 years. Her family has accused her in-laws of dowry harassment and abetting suicide.

What allegations have Twisha’s in-laws made?
Tvisha’s in-laws claimed that she was a drug addict. Police have registered an FIR against Tvisha’s husband and lawyer Samarth Singh and her mother-in-law and former district judge Giribala Singh on dowry harassment charges.
What advice did the Supreme Court give to the media?
The bench of Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi said that the court will decide that the investigation of the case should be fair, independent and bias-free. The bench has said, ‘We are distressed by some actions. We would request our media friends to avoid taking statements from the victim’s family or the family of the other party. Let things proceed as per law and procedure.

‘Don’t present pain as a sound bite’
The bench said, ‘We request the media not to record the statements of the victim’s family and not to present their pain as mere sound bytes. One should avoid creating any discussion in this matter.
What argument did Tushar Mehta give to the media?
Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the Madhya Pradesh government, said that due to the intervention of the media, the investigation of the case has progressed. He said that this case is a message to all parents that it is better for the daughter to get divorced than to face such an unfortunate incident.
The Supreme Court took note of this argument of the Solicitor General. The court has said that CBI should take over the case, this issue will be raised before the authorities.

‘Tell the facts to the agency, not the media,’
The Supreme Court said, ‘We would like to ask the family members of the victim as well as the family members of the accused to record their views before the investigating agency instead of giving statements in public or on media platforms so that the ongoing investigation is not adversely affected or prejudiced.’
The Supreme Court said, ‘We also request the media to desist from recording the statements of persons who are potential witnesses, as this may have undue influence on the findings of the issues which are to be investigated.’

How did the case reach the Supreme Court?
The Supreme Court took suo motu cognizance and heard this case. The court has said, ‘We also request the people to avoid speculation and have faith in one of the major investigating agencies of the country. We are confident that the agency will conclude the investigation when the time comes.
