Tension at its peak in the Strait of Hormuz: Firing on Indian ship created panic, captain’s audio surfaced
Tehran. The increasing tension in West Asia has now reached a dangerous point, whose direct impact is visible on international maritime trade. The incident of alleged firing by the Iranian Navy on Indian flagged ships in the Strait of Hormuz has made the situation more serious. This is the same important sea route from where oil is supplied to a large part of the world.
According to reports, the situation worsened when Iran suddenly decided to close this route and started stopping the ships passing through there. During this time, Indian ships were also stopped and firing on them has come to light. This entire matter has raised concerns in India.
Meanwhile, a big development has come to light regarding the Indian supertanker ‘Sanmar Herald’, which was passing through Iraq carrying about 20 lakh barrels of oil. It is alleged that during this time gunboats belonging to the Iranian Revolutionary Guards (IRGC) opened fire on the ship.
An audio related to this incident has also surfaced, which is said to be of the captain of the ship. In this, the captain expresses his displeasure at the Iranian Navy and asks why the attack was carried out suddenly when permission was given to open the way earlier. The captain also said that his ship had already been included in the passing list.
The incident was also confirmed by the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO), which cited the role of gunboats linked to Iran.
The situation became more serious when Iran issued a radio message warning of complete closure of the Strait of Hormuz. After this, maritime traffic in this area almost came to a standstill.
The Indian government took a strong stand on the incident, summoned the Iranian ambassador and expressed serious concern over the safety of Indian ships. The Ministry of External Affairs has clearly stated that the safety of Indian citizens and ships is the top priority.
It is a matter of relief that all the crew of ‘Sanmar Herald’ is safe. The Directorate General of Shipping is continuously monitoring the situation and steps are also being taken to protect other Indian ships.
This incident is an indication that tensions in West Asia are now becoming a major threat not only to regional, but also to global energy supply and trade.
