The new Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake will differ from the previous movies in one major way.
Curry Barker has been tapped to write and direct a new Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake for A24. The project does not yet have an official release date, and plot details remain under wraps at this time. Barker made his feature film directorial debut in 2024 with Milk & Serial, which was then followed up with Obsession in 2025.
How will the Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake differ from the franchise’s past movies?
Speaking at a recent Q&A hosted by Total Film, via Bloody DisgustingBarker opened up about how his new Texas Chainsaw Massacre reboot will be different from past movies in the franchise.
“A lot of people are excited about [the reboot]but a lot of people are like, ‘Put this thing to bed. It’s all been done.’ I beg to differ,” Barker commented. “Seriously. I really think that the potential for that series has not been fully realized. I actually feel like a lot of the remakes went the opposite direction than it should have gone.
“I’m really excited to do a Texas Chainsaw Massacre that’s not just about a guy chasing some people around with a chainsaw; that has some heart to it. You care about these characters and want to see them survive, and it’s brutal.”
With the exception of maybe the first movie, most Texas Chainsaw Massacre reboots and sequels don’t focus too much on the actual protagonists of the movies; rather, they’re well aware that audiences are there to see Leatherface and the Sawyer Family. Barker’s comments, however, imply that there will be more focus on the victims rather than the murderers.
Barker also said that he loves the original The Texas Chainsaw Massacre movie directed by Tobe Hooper.
“I think that one is really raw and was really good for its time,” he said. “And I actually think the 2003 remake is actually quite good too, but it could also be from — there’s a nostalgia there.”
