Thailand took a 2-0 lead into halftime at a packed Jalan Besar Stadium after Poeiphimai struck in the 14th and 26th minutes. Singapore had an opportunity to reduce the deficit from the penalty spot but saw Shawal Anuar’s effort saved by Thailand goalkeeper Kampol Pathomakkakul.
Singapore started brightly, dominating possession and pushing Thailand deep in the opening stages. However, Thailand’s pressing and counterattacking approach proved effective.
In the 14th minute, Seksan Ratree won possession in midfield before finding Poeiphimai, whose shot took a slight deflection off a Singapore defender and beat goalkeeper Izwan Mahbud.
Thailand doubled their advantage 12 minutes later. Waris Choolthong delivered a cross from the right after a swift counterattack, and Poeiphimai headed into the net unmarked.
Singapore was awarded a penalty in the 31st minute after VAR review found that Burapha had pushed Shawal Anuar during a corner. However, Anuar’s effort was pushed away by Pathomakkakul.
Poeiphimai, who had scored both goals, was forced off with an ankle injury in the 44th minute and was replaced by Patrik Gustavsson.
Singapore brought on Ilhan Fandi for the second half in an attempt to change the game, but Thailand struck again in the 51st minute.
Gustavsson raced down the left before delivering the ball into the box for Ratree, who finished cleanly to make it 3-0.
Singapore continued to attack and held 72% possession with 10 minutes remaining, but struggled to create clear chances against Thailand’s defense.
Fandi finally gave the hosts hope in the 84th minute with a superb individual effort. He cut inside before curling the ball toward the far corner. The shot struck the post and went in, leaving Pathomakkakul with no chance.
The goal was Thailand’s first conceded at the tournament.
Singapore pressed for another goal in the closing minutes but could not reduce the deficit further. Thailand held on for a 3-1 victory and will take a two-goal advantage into the second leg.
