The actress narrated her experience of 40 years of loneliness.

Usha Nadkarni: Actress Usha Nadkarni, who became a household name with her powerful performance in the popular TV serial “Pavitra Rishta,” has been active in the acting world for nearly seven decades. From Hindi and Marathi cinema to the small screen, she has brought to life roles of all kinds. Her career has always been built on her own terms, although she often worked for money, even when she felt she wasn’t getting the respect she deserved. Even at the age of 80, living alone in an apartment in Mumbai, she continues to take charge of her life and work.

Usha Nadkarni’s childhood was spent in a traumatic and terrifying environment , threatened by her cruel father and expelled from the home by her mother
. Her father was an Air Force officer, but his behavior was extremely violent and full of anger. He often brutally beat Usha, her siblings, and her mother. In an interview, Usha described her father’s abuse, saying that if a newspaper was even slightly crumpled or the children’s books were not neatly arranged, her father would lose his temper and tear them up. The terrifying situation was such that the other children would run away in fear when they saw one of their siblings being beaten. Once, her father was brutally beating her brother, and when Usha tried to stop him, he attacked her with a coconut-cutter.

Her mother did not want Usha to become an actor.
She suffered a deep wound on her hand, but the very next day she went to perform in a play with that injury. Due to her father’s strict attitude, she could never share her dream of acting with him. When she told her mother, who was a teacher, about her desire to become an actor, her mother did not like it at all. In their middle-class family, there was a great fear of taunts from neighbors. When Usha did not give up her stubbornness, her mother took all her belongings, threw them on the road and threw her out of the house. After this, Usha had to take shelter at a friend’s house for a week until her father brought her back home.

The bitter truth about separation from her husband and raising her son:
Usha Nadkarni has never openly talked about her personal life or her husband. Recently, she revealed for the first time that she separated from her husband many years ago. Although she holds no bitterness towards him or his family, she still hosts lunches and dinners for his family. She has a son from her marriage, who is now settled abroad. Due to her busy work schedule, Usha was unable to devote sufficient time to her son. Her brother’s house was large, so her son grew up living with his grandmother and maternal uncle. Due to her busy schedule performing in Marathi plays, she had to perform multiple shows a day, which meant she could only meet her son when she had time. Usha shared with great emotion that her son now tells her, “You only gave birth to me; my real mother was my grandmother.” Consequently, her son is not very attached to her and considers her grandmother, not her, as his mother. The actress still regrets being away from her son.

Usha’s son lives abroad and all her siblings have passed away, leaving her completely alone. She has been living alone since 1987,
for nearly four decades. When she first moved into her new apartment, she was afraid to be alone. She feared being attacked from behind, so she often asked the watchman to accompany her to the door. But over time, this fear has completely subsided. Now, at 80, she faces questions about death with a calm mind. When asked if she fears being alone and suddenly leaving this world, she bluntly replied that a person cannot decide how they will die. Some people die in their sleep, while others die in the hospital. She has no fear of this at all. She believes that if she ever passes away in her sleep, the neighbours will knock on the door and think, ‘The old lady has not opened the door today.’
