Elections have been officially announced for a total of 11 seats, including 10 Rajya Sabha seats in UP and one in Uttarakhand, for which voting will be held on October 16. For information, let us tell you that the tenure of these 10 Rajya Sabha MPs from Uttar Pradesh is going to be completed on 25th November this year, due to which this election is being considered very important.
Talking about the present time, out of these 10 seats, 8 seats are held by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), one seat by Samajwadi Party (SP) and one seat by Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP). The BJP members whose tenure is ending include former DGP Brijlal, Seema Dwivedi, Neeraj Shekhar, Geeta Shakya, Hardeep Singh Puri, Arun Singh and BL Verma. Apart from this, the tenure of Dr. Dinesh Sharma was also till November 25, but after he was made the Lieutenant Governor of Andaman and Nicobar, he had already resigned from this post, hence elections are to be held on that vacant seat also. Also, the tenure of National General Secretary Ram Gopal Yadav of Samajwadi Party and Ramji Gautam of BSP is also ending at this time.
Mayawati's BSP going towards zero!
There are a total of 403 seats in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly, but due to the death of 6 members of the Assembly within the last one year, now only 397 members will vote for these 10 Rajya Sabha seats. According to the fixed mathematical formula, to win a Rajya Sabha seat in UP, votes of at least 37 MLAs are required. But after the death of BSP's only MLA Umashankar Singh, now there is not a single member of Bahujan Samaj Party left in the legislature. In such a situation, as soon as the tenure of the only member from Rajya Sabha is completed, the account of BSP in the upper house of the Parliament i.e. Rajya Sabha will also become completely zero.
Samajwadi Party may get two seats, will the MLAs break even this time?
If we look at the equations, Samajwadi Party currently has 101 MLAs in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly. On the basis of this numerical strength, Akhilesh Yadav's party has every hope of easily getting two Rajya Sabha seats, provided there is no cross voting in the party. However, there is also a strong discussion in political circles that if Samajwadi Party MLAs defect or cross voting takes place before the elections, then the party may have to lose one of its Rajya Sabha seats.
