Adani Defense & Aerospace has signed a five-year contract with Indo-Russian Rifles Private Limited (IRRPL) to supply indigenous 7.62×39 mm small-caliber ammunition for the AK-203 assault rifle program. The partnership will integrate AK-203 rifle and ammunition manufacturing processes in India. This will ensure an integrated and consistent supply chain throughout the contract period. It is manufactured in various cities of Uttar Pradesh.
Where will the production be done?
Under this arrangement, Adani Defense & Aerospace has come forward to fulfill the ammunition requirement of assault rifles. It will utilize its existing capabilities of manufacturing small-caliber ammunition, including its manufacturing facility in Kanpur. By providing an Indian source for the 7.62x39mm round, the agreement now reduces dependence on external sources and ensures continuity of supply for the armed forces.
2019 as per India-Russia Inter-Governmental Agreement
IRRPL was established in 2019 under an Indo-Russia inter-governmental agreement to manufacture AK-203 assault rifles for the Indian Armed Forces. The joint venture operates a manufacturing facility at Korwa in Amethi district of Uttar Pradesh. The company is a collaboration between Indian shareholders Advanced Weapons and Equipment India Limited and Munitions India Limited and Russian partners Concern Kalashnikov and Rosoboronexport.
It furthers the national goal of 'Atmanirbhar Bharat'
In December 2021, the Ministry of Defense entered into a formal agreement with IRRPL for the production of 6,01,427 AK-203 rifles at the Korwa project. By securing a reliable, locally produced supply chain for the ammunition required by these weapons, this new agreement strengthens domestic capacity in the small arms ecosystem and furthers the national goal of 'Self-reliant India' in defense manufacturing.
