‘The entire process will be based on population ratio’, Kiren Rijiju said regarding the delimitation bill.
Amidst the ongoing debate regarding delimitation in the country, a big statement has come out from the Central Government. Union Minister Kiren Rijiju has clarified that whether it is delimitation or women’s reservation, even after these decisions, the representation of all the states will remain balanced and proportional. However, political turmoil and concerns on this issue have still not subsided.
The central government is preparing to pass many important bills in the three-day special parliamentary session. Prominent among these is the Women’s Reservation Bill, under which a target has been set to provide 33 percent reservation to women in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies from 2029. Apart from this, the government is planning to bring the Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill, 2026, in which it is proposed to increase the number of Lok Sabha seats from 543 to 850.
What does the Delimitation Bill say?
The government also wants to take forward the Delimitation Bill, 2026. Under this bill, a commission will be formed to redraw the boundaries of constituencies on the basis of new census data. Its purpose is to better distribute seats according to population.
Why worry about southern states?
Many states of South India have expressed concern about this proposal. They believe that due to less population, their share of seats may decrease in future, while northern states may get more seats. In such a situation, they fear that their political power at the national level may weaken.
Rijiju’s reply: ‘There will be no harm’
Responding to these apprehensions, Kiren Rijiju said that the representation of the states will remain proportional as before. He said that this entire process will be based on population ratio and no state will be treated unfairly. He assured that by increasing the total number of seats, all the states will benefit equally.
targeted the opposition
Rijiju accused the opposition parties of giving political color to this issue. He says that an important topic like women’s reservation should not be used for political gains. He also said that it will not be easy to oppose this bill, because the decision related to it is related to national interest and commitment.
‘Southern states should be happy’
The Union Minister also said that the southern states should be satisfied with this decision, as no reduction is being made in their existing seats. He explained that the total seats will be increased by 50 percent and the seats of each state will also be increased in the same proportion, so that their share will remain the same.
Differences between government and opposition
Although the government is continuously claiming that delimitation will not harm any state, India Block believes that this may reduce the influence of southern and north-eastern states in the Lok Sabha. For this reason the political debate on this issue has intensified.
