Ministry of Railways has taken a major step towards timely providing 238 AC EMU rakes to Mumbai Suburban Railway. Now these rakes will be manufactured in different coach factories. The supply of coaches will start from 2027. The target is to complete all supplies by 2030. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav shared this information.
He informed that the Railway Ministry has given priority to the manufacturing of 238 AC EMU rakes through Integral Coach Factory (ICF) located in Chennai, Rail Coach Factory (RCF) located in Kapurthala, Punjab and Modern Coach Factory (MCF) located in Rae Bareli, UP. This step has been taken to ensure timely availability of trains in line with the commissioning of infrastructure under the Mumbai Urban Transport Project (MUTP).

Where and how many rakes will be manufactured?
According to the Railway Ministry, 120 AC EMU rakes will be produced at Chennai ICF, 71 rakes through Kapurthala RCF and 47 rakes at Modern Rail Coach Factory, Rae Bareli. The three coach factories will together produce 238 rakes.
Railways have the ability to make modern trains
The production units of Indian Railways have the capacity to manufacture air-conditioned EMUs, Vande Bharat Trainsets and Vande Metro Trainsets in addition to modern passenger trains. Railway Board has approved the procurement of approved AC EMU rakes based on the extant RDSO/ICF instructions. This will ensure speedy manufacturing and supply of trains.

The ministry further informed that there is a plan to start the supply of rakes from 2027. The target is to complete the supply of all rakes by 2030. Supply of the first trainsets during 2027 followed by meeting the entire requirement by 2030 will help bridge the gap between commissioning of infrastructure and induction of rolling stock. Apart from this, maximum utilization of infrastructure will be possible.
