ODI 5000 International Matches: The date 7 August 2026 is written in golden letters in the history of cricket . The ‘ICC Cricket World Cup League-2’ is underway between two teams, Scotland vs Canada. Although ODI cricket has seen many changes in this long journey of 55 years, the craze for this format among the audience still remains.
Even though the T20 format has been introduced in cricket, the importance of ODI cricket has remained the same. Cricket fans are eagerly waiting for the ICC World Cup to be held in 2027. In the ODI format, initially three World Cups were played with 60 overs each. After that, all the World Cups are played with 50 overs.
One Day International cricket officially began on 5 January 1971 with a historic match played between Australia and England at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. In the early days, ODI matches were played in 40 or 60 overs. Not only this, but the first three ICC Cricket World Cups of 1975, 1979 and 1983 were played in a format of 60-60 overs each.
According to the needs of the time and changes in international rules, ODI matches were made 50-50 overs from the 1987 World Cup. It took the cricket world 24 years to reach the milestone of the first 1,000 matches, but due to the increasing number of matches in the subsequent period, the milestone of 5,000 matches was completed quickly.
