Who was Kanpatimar Shankariya?
Kanpatimar Shankaria was born in Jaipur, Rajasthan, in 1952. Initially, he wasn’t a prominent figure in the criminal world, but gradually became involved in thefts and crimes. Between 1977 and 1978, he committed a series of murders. According to police records and media reports, he was charged with approximately 70 murders.
How did “Kanpatimar” come to be?
Shankariya used a unique method of murder. He would strike his victims with a hammer at the back of their heads, just below the ear, near the temple. This method earned him the nickname “Kanpatimar.” It is said that he often targeted people walking alone at night. He would attack suddenly, leaving the victim with no time to recover.
After the murder, he said, “I enjoyed killing.”
After being arrested and questioned by the police, his confessions further terrified the public. According to reports, he said he enjoyed attacking people with a hammer. This confession stunned even the investigating officers.

After a lengthy investigation and a series of clues, the police finally succeeded in apprehending him. Following his arrest, he was tried and sentenced to death.
He was hanged at the age of 27.
Kanpatimar Shankaria was hanged in Jaipur on May 16, 1979. He was only 27 years old at the time. Before his execution, he expressed remorse for his crimes and said that no one should be like him.
