The epic film, starring Matt Damon as Odysseus, has now surpassed the lifetime global collection of Nolan’s 2008 blockbuster The Dark Knight.
Despite facing strong competition from the latest Spider-Man release, The Odyssey has continued to draw audiences, helped by its large-format and IMAX screenings.
The Odyssey crosses $1 billion worldwide
After three weeks in theatres, The Odyssey has earned around $429.6 million in North America and $578.8 million from international markets.
That takes its worldwide box-office total to approximately $1.009 billion.
The figure puts The Odyssey ahead of The Dark Knight, which finished its original theatrical run with around $1.008 billion worldwide.
The film is now closing in on The Dark Knight Rises, which remains Nolan’s highest-grossing film with around $1.081 billion globally.
The Odyssey needs roughly $73 million more to overtake that mark.
Spider-Man competition fails to stop The Odyssey
The Odyssey enjoyed a powerful opening at the global box office and crossed the $500 million mark during its first week.
It maintained a strong run in its second week before facing increased competition from the latest Spider-Man film.
The competition affected its third-weekend performance in North America. The Odyssey earned about $51 million during that weekend, compared with $90 million the previous weekend.
Its international performance was also affected as Spider-Man claimed a significant share of available screens.
However, strong demand for IMAX screenings has helped The Odyssey maintain its box-office momentum.
What is The Odyssey about?
The film is based on Homer’s ancient Greek epic poem and follows Odysseus, the king of Ithaca, as he attempts to return home after the Trojan War.
Matt Damon plays Odysseus, while Anne Hathaway stars as Penelope and Tom Holland plays their son, Telemachus.
The ensemble cast also includes Robert Pattinson, Charlize Theron, Lupita Nyong’o, Samantha Morton and Zendaya.
The film has received strong critical praise, particularly for its scale, practical effects and performances.
Could The Odyssey become Nolan’s biggest hit?
With its $1 billion milestone already achieved, The Odyssey is now within striking distance of becoming Christopher Nolan’s highest-grossing film.
If the film adds another $73 million, it will overtake The Dark Knight Rises and claim the top spot among Nolan’s films at the global box office.
