Third party AI will be expensive on WhatsApp Business, Meta AI will benefit, new pricing model implemented
Tezzbuzz Desk- Meta-owned instant messaging platform WhatsApp is set to implement a new pricing model for its WhatsApp Business API, which could significantly increase costs for companies using third-party AI chatbots.
Under the new arrangement, chatbots created using third party AI models like ChatGPT and Claude may now prove to be more expensive than before. Meta’s own AI system is likely to benefit directly from this.
New AI pricing model will be implemented from October 1
According to reports, the cost of AI-based conversations for WhatsApp Business will see a major change from October 1, 2026. Under the new model, using third party AI bots may cost companies almost twice as much as using Meta AI.
Currently, no separate fee is charged for the use of AI agents on WhatsApp Business API, but this situation will change after the new change.
Meta AI vs. Third Party AI: Big Difference in Cost
According to an approximate calculation, the cost of a complex AI conversation of 10,000 messages could be as follows –
- Third Party AI Bots: Around $968 (about Rs 92,000)
- Meta AI based chatbots: Around 400 to 500 dollars (about Rs 38,000 to 47,000)
This gap may put additional financial pressure on companies running chatbots based on third-party models such as GPT, Claude, Mistral, Qwen and Kimi.
Impact on startups and business partners
This change is likely to have a significant impact on startups and companies that have used advanced AI models for their customer support and automation.
Experts believe that this change can become a challenge for small and mid-level startups, as increased costs can affect their business models. Some companies may also consider leaving the WhatsApp platform.
Token-based pricing may increase expenses
The new pricing system will be token-based, which means the cost will be determined based on the complexity and length of each message.
According to experts, this could lead to a situation of “bill shock”, where companies’ expenses could increase much more than anticipated. There can be a big difference in cost between simple questions and complex AI interactions.
Companies will have to do better planning
Experts say that companies will now have to better monitor their AI usage. This includes usage tracking systems, setting up expense alerts, creating fallback and routing logic. Deciding when AI is necessary and when simple automation is sufficient. All these steps will become more important now than ever.
While Meta’s own AI system may get an edge from WhatsApp Business’s new AI pricing model, the costs of companies dependent on third party AI are expected to increase. This change may impact the entire ecosystem of business messaging and AI integration in the future.
