After the US Senate’s Russia sanctions bill, the threat of 100% tariff on India has increased. Know the whole matter between Trump and Modi regarding buying oil from Russia.
Tension seems to be increasing once again regarding trade between America and India. This time the matter is related to India’s purchase of oil from Russia. The US Senate has approved a bill related to new sanctions on Russia. This bill has a provision to impose up to 100% tariff on big countries purchasing oil and gas from Russia. India is also within the possible scope of this provision. However, at present 100% tariff has not been implemented in India.
Senate passed Russia Sanctions Bill by 86-11
On August 7, the US Senate passed the Lindsey O. Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act of 2026 by a vote of 86–11. The purpose of this bill is to increase economic pressure on Russia, especially targeting its oil and gas earnings. There is a provision in the bill to give the US President the authority to impose up to 100% tariff on the products of countries that buy crude oil or natural gas from Russia on a large scale. According to the existing provisions, big energy buyers of Russia including India and China can come under its purview.
Why did buying oil from Russia become an issue?
After the start of Ukraine war, India significantly increased its purchase of crude oil from Russia. Crude from Russia has on many occasions been more competitive than other international suppliers. For India, this purchase is also linked to its energy needs and import costs. But America and its allies argue that the money received from countries buying oil from Russia supports Moscow’s economy. For this reason, Washington is trying to increase pressure on Russia’s energy revenues.
100% Tariff is not yet implemented
The most important thing here is that passing the bill from the Senate does not mean that 100% tariff has been imposed on India. The bill is yet to go through the process of the US House of Representatives. Only after this will the further legislative process be completed. Therefore, at present it is correct to say that there is a threat or possible tariff regarding 100% tariff on India, not to say that it is an implemented tariff. That is, if this bill becomes a law and the Trump administration uses it, then only the question of imposing such additional duty on some or all the affected products coming from India will arise.
The matter can be resolved between Trump and Modi
Meanwhile, the statement of US President’s advisor Peter Navarro has added a new angle to this entire matter. On August 12, Navarro said that Donald Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi have a very good working relationship and both will resolve this tariff issue among themselves. Navarro’s statement has come at a time when the discussion is intense regarding possible 100% tariff on India. According to him, this issue can be resolved only at the level of Trump and Modi.
What will happen if 100% tariff is imposed?
If 100% tariff is imposed on India in future, it may affect Indian products going to the American market. Increase in tariff may make Indian goods expensive for American buyers and may affect the competitiveness of Indian exporters. However, its actual impact will depend on which products, if the tariff is imposed, it will be applicable on and what will be its final rate.
Energy security is also a big issue for India
For India, the matter is not just about trade with America. The purchase of crude oil from Russia is also linked to the country’s energy security. If due to American pressure India has to make major changes in the purchase of Russian oil, it may impact crude oil sourcing and import costs. Therefore, on one hand India is faced with trade relations with America, and on the other hand there is also the question of meeting its energy needs.
China is also within the scope of this bill
This whole matter is not just about India. Other countries purchasing oil and gas from Russia on a large scale may also come under the purview of this proposed tariff mechanism. China is also a big potential target. It is clear from this that this step of the US Senate is part of a broader strategy to increase economic pressure on Russia. Washington also wants to put pressure on those countries which remain big buyers of Russia’s energy exports.
What will happen next now?
Currently the focus is on the US House of Representatives. The bill has been passed by the Senate, but it still has to go through the further legislative process. After this the Trump administration can decide whether to use this authority or not.
Meanwhile, Peter Navarro’s statement definitely shows that there is scope to resolve this issue between India and America through dialogue. That is, the picture right now is that 100% tariff has not been implemented on India, but the bill passed by the US Senate has definitely tried to open the way for Trump to impose such a tariff.
