Three departments of Delhi government issued ‘blue prints’, officers will not use car one day a week
The effect of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s appeal to save petrol is now visible in Delhi government departments also. PWD, Delhi Jal Board (DJB) and Irrigation and Flood Control Department have issued new 11-point guidelines for officers and employees, which have been implemented with immediate effect. Minister in-charge of these departments, Parvesh Sahib Singh has directed that priority should be given to virtual meetings as far as possible to reduce unnecessary travels.
Under the new instructions, officers of these three departments will no longer use private cars once a week. Apart from this, emphasis has been laid on promoting the use of electric vehicles, traveling together for official events and adopting car-pooling to save fuel. The instructions also advise to avoid foreign trips and organize important meetings through digital medium. The government believes that these steps will reduce fuel consumption, reduce pollution and also save government expenses.
Pravesh Sahib Singh said, ‘The new guidelines issued in the Public Works Department, Delhi Jal Board (DJB) and Irrigation and Flood Control Departments are being followed seriously. He said, “These new instructions are being followed well in these departments and this is not being done just as a formality, but as a resolution.” The Minister said that the aim of the government is not only to save petrol and diesel, but also to promote energy conservation, environmental protection and responsible administrative functioning. He appealed to the officers and employees to give priority to virtual meetings, car-pooling and use of electric vehicles.
One day will be celebrated as ‘No Car Day’
Under the new guidelines, now one day a week will be celebrated as ‘No Car Day’. On this day, officers and employees will have to use public transport, seat sharing or carpooling to travel to and from office. Under the new policy, Public Works Department (PWD), Delhi Jal Board (DJB) and Irrigation and Flood Control Department have been instructed to promote the use of electric vehicles. Besides, it has also been asked to speed up the process of installing electric vehicle charging system in office premises. Officers have been advised to adopt carpooling as far as possible during inspections, field visits and office commuting. The government believes that this will reduce fuel consumption, reduce traffic pressure and help in pollution control. The Delhi government has also given instructions to give priority to virtual meetings and digital functioning, so that unnecessary travel can be reduced.
