Tobacco addiction is taking a toll! 40% of cancer patients are young, experts issue a stark warning

Statistics released on World No Tobacco Day show that tobacco use is no longer limited to the elderly. While previously serious tobacco-related illnesses were more common in older adults, now even younger adults are becoming victims of life-threatening diseases like cancer.

Thousands of new cancer patients are seeking treatment at Indore’s government and private hospitals every year. According to experts, a significant number of these are long-term tobacco users and tobacco-related products. This situation is becoming a major public health challenge.

The growing addiction to tobacco and e-cigarettes is making youth victims.

Health experts say that the use of e-cigarettes, along with traditional forms of tobacco, has risen rapidly. Although the sale and use of e-cigarettes is banned in India, they are still reaching young people through various channels. Their use is also reported to be increasing among school and college students.

Experts believe that while it’s initially adopted as a fashion or hobby, the habit gradually turns into an addiction. This then leads to the individual switching to other tobacco products. Worryingly, even young women are now arriving at hospitals with tobacco-related illnesses. Doctors say that, along with awareness campaigns, it’s crucial to continuously educate children about its dangers at the family and school levels.

Tobacco is increasing cancer and other serious diseases

According to doctors, the most significant impact of tobacco is cancer. Oral cancer is the most common cancer in India. Furthermore, lung cancer, throat cancer, esophageal cancer, stomach cancer, and several serious blood-related diseases are also linked to tobacco use.

Health experts say that tobacco not only increases the risk of cancer but also heart disease, respiratory disease, asthma, and eye problems. Globally, millions of people die each year from tobacco-related diseases. In India, the use of gutkha, khaini, zarda, and other smokeless tobacco products also remains a major problem.

The purpose of World No Tobacco Day is not only to raise awareness but also to make people understand that staying away from tobacco can prevent many serious diseases. Experts believe that the sooner one quits this habit, the greater the potential for health damage.
