Delhi-NCR May See Heavy Rain

Delhi-NCR is likely to remain cloudy with spells of rain. The IMD has specifically warned of heavy rain along with thunderstorms, lightning and squally conditions in Delhi and adjoining areas.

The weather system responsible for the active spell is a well-marked low-pressure area over Gangetic West Bengal and adjoining regions, which is expected to move west-northwestwards and keep rainfall activity going across several parts of the country.

Mountains Face the Bigger Weather Risk

The hills are particularly important today.

Uttarakhand

Uttarakhand is under a very-heavy-rain warning for September 2, with thunderstorms and lightning also possible. The IMD’s warning continues beyond today, with heavy rain forecast through September 8.

Dehradun-Sahastradhara is forecast to experience heavy to very heavy rainfall with thunderstorms and lightning today.

Nainital

Nainital is also in a high-risk rainfall zone. The forecast calls for heavy to very heavy rain, accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning on September 2.

Himachal Pradesh

Himachal Pradesh is also under a heavy-rain warning today and September 3. Shimla is expected to remain cloudy with thunderstorms and rain.

Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh

Thunderstorms, lightning and squally conditions are possible in Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh today and tomorrow, although the IMD does not currently have a heavy-rain warning for the region.

Why Is the Rain Increasing Again?

A combination of the low-pressure system, monsoon trough and associated atmospheric circulations is keeping rainfall active over central, eastern and northern India. Heavy to very heavy rain is expected in parts of Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand.

Travel Alert for the Hills

Those planning to travel to Uttarakhand or Himachal Pradesh should exercise particular caution today. Heavy rainfall in mountainous areas can quickly increase the risk of landslides, falling rocks, swollen streams and road disruptions.

If travel is unavoidable, check the latest local administration and weather advisories before leaving and avoid crossing flooded roads or streams.

Today’s Key Weather Highlights

  • Delhi-NCR: Heavy rain, thunderstorm and lightning possible.
  • Uttarakhand: Very heavy rain; highest concern among the northern hill states.
  • Himachal Pradesh: Heavy rain likely.
  • Nainital and Dehradun: Heavy to very heavy rain with thunderstorms.
  • Jammu & Kashmir/Ladakh: Thunderstorms and squally conditions possible.
  • Strong winds: Gusty/squally winds may accompany thunderstorms in affected areas.

Overall, September 2 is shaping up to be another active monsoon day, with the biggest concern shifting toward the Himalayan region—particularly Uttarakhand.
