Edman delivers walk-off hit in the 10th
LOS ANGELES — Tommy Edman hit a two-strike single to drive in the winning run in the 10th inning Friday night, lifting the Los Angeles Dodgers to a 5-4 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Edman lined a pitch from Gregory Soto into left field, allowing automatic runner Kiké Hernández to score from third base.
The victory kept Los Angeles as Major League Baseball’s only undefeated team in extra innings. The Dodgers improved to 5-0 in such games.
Dodgers build the winning opportunity
Hernández began the bottom of the 10th at second base under MLB’s extra-inning runner rule.
Pinch-hitter Alex Call struck out before Pittsburgh intentionally walked Mookie Betts. Kyle Tucker then grounded into a fielder’s choice at second, where Betts was retired.
Edman followed with the decisive hit against Soto, who fell to 5-4.
Evan Phillips earned the victory after pitching one inning of relief, improving his record to 1-2.
The Dodgers appeared positioned to win in regulation before Pittsburgh’s Oneil Cruz tied the game in the eighth.
Cruz hit a two-run homer off reliever Kyle Hurt to erase Los Angeles’ 4-2 advantage and make it 4-4.
The National League West-leading Dodgers nevertheless recovered to secure their eighth victory in 11 games.
Betts and Muncy power Dodgers’ offense
Max Muncy gave Los Angeles an early lead with a two-run homer with two outs in the first inning.
Pittsburgh had gone ahead 1-0 earlier in the inning when Nick Gonzales delivered an RBI single to center field. Muncy’s homer put the Dodgers in front 2-1.
Gonzales tied the game at 2-2 with another RBI single to center in the third.
Betts restored Los Angeles’ two-run advantage later in the third with a two-out, two-run single that made the score 4-2.
Yamamoto strikes out nine
Dodgers starter Yoshinobu Yamamoto allowed two runs and five hits over 6 1/3 innings. The Japanese right-hander recorded nine strikeouts.
Yamamoto was removed after allowing the potential tying runs to reach base in the seventh inning. Jake Mangum led off with a double before Yamamoto hit Jared Triolo with a pitch.
Reliever Brock Stewart entered and retired the next two batters to preserve the Dodgers’ lead and end the threat.
Dodgers leave bases loaded in seventh
Los Angeles had an opportunity to extend its advantage in the bottom of the seventh.
Shohei Ohtani drew a leadoff walk and stole second base. Pirates reliever Luke Bachar then issued consecutive two-out walks to Muncy and Betts, loading the bases for Tucker.
Tucker, who has struggled since joining the Dodgers, flied out to center field to end the inning.
Pittsburgh capitalized in the next half-inning when Cruz tied the game with his two-run homer.
Saturday’s pitching matchup
Pirates right-hander Jared Jones is scheduled to start Saturday. He enters the game with a 2-5 record and a 4.78 ERA.
Dodgers left-hander Tarik Skubal will oppose him. Skubal is 7-7 with a 2.85 ERA overall but is 0-2 with a 3.18 ERA since being traded to Los Angeles earlier in August.
