Breaking traffic rules in Delhi will cost heavily, 48 lakh challans issued in 6 months, know which state made the record
E-Challan 2026: If you also drive in Delhi, then taking traffic rules lightly can prove costly. Let us tell you that the action against violation of traffic rules in the capital has become stricter than before. In which between January and June 2026, Delhi Traffic Police issued 48.42 lakh challans, which is about 1 lakh more than the same period last year. In which it was seen that 17.21 lakh challans were issued automatically through red light and speed violation detection cameras. Along with this, the police has also made many technical and engineering improvements to reduce road safety and jams.
Why did challans increase in Delhi?
It is being seen that to improve the traffic system in the capital, emphasis is being laid not only on fines but also on modern technology. Taking this forward, this year corrective work has been done on 30 major congestion hotspots while 8 signal-free corridors have been developed. Apart from this, 2,187 FIRs have also been registered in cases of dangerous driving. Regarding this, officials say that the purpose of these steps is not only to issue challans but also to increase road safety and reduce traffic jams.
In which state were the maximum challans issued in the country?
If we look at the e-challan data of the entire country from January 1, 2019 to December 31, 2023, Tamil Nadu has been at the forefront. About 5.57 crore e-challans were issued here. Uttar Pradesh stood at second place where 4.40 crore challans were issued. After this comes Kerala (1.88 crore), Haryana (1.03 crore) and Delhi (90.22 lakh). If we talk about Union Territories, Delhi remained at the top. This was followed by Chandigarh, Puducherry, Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu and Ladakh.
Uttar Pradesh number-1 in revenue
It is seen that Tamil Nadu remained first in the number of challans but Uttar Pradesh is at the forefront in terms of earnings from fines. In which UP got revenue of more than Rs 24,951 crore in five years. This was followed by Haryana (Rs 14,651 crore), Bihar (Rs 14,003 crore) and Rajasthan (Rs 13,934 crore). Whereas Delhi received revenue of Rs 5,714 crore.

18.24 crore e-challans across the country
For information, let us tell you that according to the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, more than 18.24 crore e-challans were issued across the country between 2019 and 2023, due to which states and union territories got a revenue of more than Rs 1.26 lakh crore. However, this data does not include figures from Telangana, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Lakshadweep and Andaman-Nicobar. Because at that time the e-challan system was not fully implemented there.
It is clear from these figures that now it does not depend only on policemen to enforce traffic rules. Rule breakers are being constantly monitored through camera based surveillance, automatic e-challan system and smart traffic management. In such a situation, the most sensible step is to follow the traffic rules before going out on the road.
