Tragedy To Turmoil: The real reason behind the hostile backlash against Saayoni Ghosh in Baruipur.

Kolkata: Jadavpur MP Saayoni Ghosh encountered severe public hostility and mocking chants during her visit to the family of a 12-year-old girl who was allegedly gang-raped and murdered in Baruipur, West Bengal. As Ghosh arrived, agitated local crowds targeted her with aggressive slogans, chanting “Gaddar” (traitor) and “Beimaan” (dishonest), alongside remarks questioning her integrity. The severe public backlash directly stems from her recent high-profile exit from the Trinamool Congress (TMC).

Political Shifts Fuel Public Anger

The local outrage intensifies against a volatile political backdrop. Ghosh is among the 19 rebel TMC parliamentarians who recently defected to the Nationalist Citizens Party of India (NCPI), led by Madan Mitra. This political realignment has caused immense friction in traditional TMC strongholds like Baruipur. Local residents openly branded her a “turncoat,” interpreting her sympathy visit through the lens of her shifted political allegiance. Security forces initially blocked the NCPI delegation due to safety concerns but eventually allowed them entry under tight security protection.

Responding to the chaos, Ghosh urged a singular focus on accountability. She emphasized that prompt judicial action overrides political discourse, stating that ensuring swift justice following such heinous crimes is paramount. Describing the tragedy as deeply harrowing, she assured the grieving family of sustained support and demanded capital punishment for the perpetrators.

Cross-Party Delegations Demand Accountability

The tragedy has drawn visits from various political factions. A Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) delegation, including State Urban Development Minister Agnimitra Paul and former MP Locket Chatterjee, met the victim’s parents earlier. Paul noted that the family expressed satisfaction with the ongoing administrative response. Additionally, Leader of the Opposition Ritabrata Banerjee, alongside rebel leaders Chandrima Bhattacharya and Seuli Saha, demanded strict capital punishment. Senior TMC leaders also visited the family to extend their solidarity.

Background Of The Brutal Crime

The horrific incident unfolded while Ghosh visited the locality with fellow NCPI member Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar. The minor went missing on July 4, and her body was later discovered stuffed in a sack near Surjyapur Haat. Emerging CCTV footage confirmed she was last seen walking with the prime suspect. Following the recovery, an enraged local mob lynched a suspected individual. Law enforcement authorities have arrested three individuals so far as the investigation continues.
