Train Chain Pulling Rules: Indian Railways is counted among the largest rail networks in the world, through which millions of passengers travel every day. Railways prepares many important rules to make the journey of passengers safe and comfortable. Keeping this security in mind, an emergency chain is provided in every compartment of the train, so that in case of any serious trouble, the train can be stopped immediately. But many times, due to lack of knowledge or carelessness, people pull this chain without any major reason.

Doing this not only stops the speed of that train, but also spoils the time and schedule of many other trains coming behind it. For this reason, Indian Railways has made very strict laws regarding chain pulling without any reason. Therefore, before setting out on a journey, you must know when the chain should not be pulled in the train and what are the railway rules related to this.

When can one pull the chain in a train?

The train chain should be pulled only in times of serious crisis. For example, if an elderly person or a child is left behind at the station, if a passenger’s health suddenly becomes very bad, if there is a fire in the train, there is a danger of theft or if someone falls down from a moving train. Pulling the chain is considered appropriate only in such emergency situations.

When can you not pull and what is the punishment?

It is a legal offense to pull the chain without any reason, just to make fun of the person or to make it easier for people to get off and on when they come late. Under Section 141 of the Railway Act, for pulling the emergency chain without any valid reason, you can face a jail term of up to 1 year, a fine of Rs 1000 or both of these punishments together.

What happens when a train chain is pulled?

As soon as the chain of the train is pulled, an air valve of the compartment opens, due to which the air from the brake pipe starts coming out rapidly. As soon as the air pressure decreases, the speed of the train starts decreasing and it stops at a short distance. With this alert, the railway staff immediately gets to know in which compartment the chain has been pulled, after which the RPF or police directly reaches the same coach for investigation. Doing this without any reason not only delays the train and wastes the time of thousands of passengers, but also increases the risk of a major accident.
