New Delhi: A change in the weather was seen in Thoothukudi district of Tamil Nadu on Sunday evening, which along with causing devastation in the entire area, surprised everyone. Let us tell you that strong winds and huge rotating clouds of dust in the district created a huge commotion in the area, due to which huge damage was seen in the area. While the people present at the spot described the storm as a tornado, the Meteorological Department said that it was not a tornado but a powerful local weather phenomenon associated with thunderstorms.

Videos recorded around Thoothukudi airport show a huge storm of dust and debris moving rapidly, blowing away objects on the road. Which people are calling a tornado on social media.

In which villages was the maximum impact seen?

Let us tell you, the maximum impact of this storm was seen in Vagaikulam and Mudivathanendal villages, which are located on the Thoothukudi-Tirunelveli highway. During this period, due to strong winds, many trees were uprooted, electric poles were damaged and sheets of roofs of houses were blown away. Not only this, according to local people, about 200 houses have been affected in some way or the other. Along with this, household items and construction materials flew in the air and fell far and wide.

Theme park also suffered damage

Due to the incident, Vagaikulam toll plaza and a private theme park located near it also suffered heavy damage. The glass, computer system and other equipment installed at the toll plaza were broken, due to which vehicles were allowed to pass without toll fee for some time. Many entertainment equipments in the theme park were also destroyed.

How many crores was the loss?

According to preliminary assessment done at the local level, the total loss can reach Rs 5 to 6 crore. Two people suffered minor injuries in the incident, but no one died, which the local people are considering as a matter of relief. Experts from the Chennai-based Regional Meteorological Center said that this incident was the result of a powerful convective storm formed due to a low pressure system. According to him, the chances of actual tornado formation in Thoothukudi are very less. This event was a meteorological activity such as a dust storm, local vortex or transient funnel cloud, which caused widespread damage due to its intensity.
