Trump and Pezeshkian can sign US-Iran peace deal: Tehran

New Delhi: The prospects for improvement in the long-standing strained relations between America and Iran appear to be getting stronger. Indications emerging on Wednesday increased hopes that an important agreement could be finalized between the two countries. According to indications from Tehran, US President Donald Trump and Iranian President Masoud Pezheshkian may support the proposed agreement, while it is likely to be formally implemented on Friday.

This development has come to light at a time when American officials have made public some important information related to the draft Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) after several days of secret negotiations. Although the two countries have not yet released the final document, it is being seen as an important progress in diplomatic circles.

Possible agreement could be historic

If the top leaders of both the countries appear together at a formal event and support the agreement, it could prove to be a major turning point in the history of relations between America and Iran. Diplomatic relations between the two countries almost ended after the Iranian Revolution of 1979 and the US Embassy hostage crisis. In such a situation, any high level agreement will be considered a historic achievement.

Trump exercised caution

However, amidst increasing speculation, US President Trump has refrained from being completely confident about the agreement. He said that nothing definite can be said about international agreements till the last moment. Trump also indicated that he may attend the program related to the agreement, but he also made it clear that it is not completely decided yet.

What are the main points in the draft?

According to US officials, the proposed document includes provisions related to limiting Iran’s enriched uranium reserves. Apart from this, information has also been given that consensus has been reached on points related to promoting regional stability and security of Lebanon.

In return, America is considering giving partial relief in some economic sanctions. However, there is no possibility of removing all the restrictions at present. The draft also mentions the provision of easy and free shipping for a limited period through the Strait of Hormuz, which is considered important for global trade and energy supply.

Tehran’s positive response

Positive signals have also been given from Iran regarding the agreement. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Ismail Bagai said that this initiative is likely to get support at the leadership level of both the countries. If this process is successful, it will be considered a significant diplomatic achievement for President Pezeshkian, who has committed to increasing dialogue with Western countries after taking power.

Although the final decision and formal announcement is still awaited, but the increasing talks between the two countries have definitely created new expectations at the global level.
