What trouble has US President Donald Trump got into?
In America, political pressure seems to be increasing on President Donald Trump’s government regarding Iran policy. On Tuesday, the US Senate passed an important resolution, which demands an end to US involvement in President Trump’s military activities against Iran. This development has come at a time when the White House is trying to negotiate towards a long-term agreement with Tehran. On the other hand, Iran has given up on conducting a nuclear survey. After which Trump looks different and irritated.
This proposal passed in the Senate by 50-48 votes. The resolution directs the President that if Congress does not specifically authorize the use of military force, the United States should withdraw its forces from military conflicts involving Iran. This move reflects growing political concern over the Trump administration’s Iran policy and the ongoing debate over the role of Congress.
Is the law effective?
However, the legal force of this proposal is limited. This is a concurrent resolution passed under the War Powers Act of 1973. The signature of the President is not necessary for such proposals and they also do not get the status of law. For this reason, this proposal is not in a position to directly change the military strategy of the Trump administration.
Can Trump do any operation without Congress’s permission?
The White House has already opposed this proposal. The administration says that this proposal is unconstitutional and not legally binding. The Trump administration has consistently claimed that the President has the constitutional authority to direct US military operations in such circumstances, even without additional approval from Congress.
This proposal was also passed by the US House of Representatives earlier this month. Its approval in both houses is an indication that there is growing concern among some lawmakers from both the Democratic and Republican parties about America’s military role in the conflict related to Iran.
What did the MPs say?
MPs supporting the proposal say that if America gets involved in any long military campaign, then explicit approval of Congress should be necessary for it. He argues that major decisions like war and military intervention should not be under the jurisdiction of the President alone, but according to the Constitution, Congress should also play a decisive role in it.
What does this proposal mean?
The passing of the resolution is also being considered as a sign that there is increasing pressure on the White House to give priority to diplomatic solutions instead of relying only on military strategy. Many MPs believe that a permanent solution to any dispute with Iran is possible only through negotiation and agreement.
Why is there an uproar over nuclear weapons?
On the other hand, differences between America and Iran regarding the nuclear program have also come to the fore. US President Donald Trump on Tuesday rejected Iran’s claim that no visit by International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) inspectors has been scheduled. Speaking to reporters after reaching Pennsylvania, Trump said that Iranian officials are making false statements and in fact Tehran has agreed to the inspection.
What did Trump say when Iran raised its hands?
When asked by reporters whether Iranian officials have refused a scheduled visit by IAEA inspectors and whether inspections are part of an agreement between the two countries, Trump responded, “They’re wrong, they’re wrong, and they know they’re wrong.” He further said, “They have told us from the inside and we have 100 percent confirmation of this. If they were right, I would have canceled these meetings right now.”
However, when Trump was asked when IAEA inspectors would finally reach Iran, he refused to give any clear timeline. He said inspectors would be sent “at the appropriate time” and there was “no rush” in the matter.
“Iran has fully and completely accepted the highest level of nuclear inspections long into the future. This will ensure ‘nuclear integrity’,” Trump wrote in a post on his social media platform Truth Social. Trump further claimed in his post that in view of other important agreements and concessions being made by Iran, America has decided to keep the Strait of Hormuz open.
What did Iran say?
Iranian officials have specifically denied that they have agreed to any scheduled visits by IAEA inspectors or to a long-term nuclear inspection program. He says that no such thing was decided during the talks held in Switzerland over the weekend.
In this way, there is a clear contradiction in the claims of both the countries amid the ongoing talks between America and Iran. While the Trump administration is claiming that Tehran has accepted comprehensive nuclear inspections and other important conditions, Iran is rejecting these claims.
In what dilemma is Trump stuck?
On one hand, the US Congress is raising questions on the military policy of the Trump administration, while on the other hand, differences are emerging at the public level between America and Iran regarding nuclear inspections and possible agreements. In such a situation, it will be important to see in the coming days in which direction the ongoing diplomatic talks between the two countries move forward and whether any comprehensive agreement can be agreed upon or not.
