Trump Targets Competitive New York District
President Donald Trump headed Friday to New York’s Hudson Valley to test his economic message in one of the country’s most competitive congressional districts ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.
Trump appeared alongside Republican Rep. Mike Lawler at Rockland Community College in Suffern, New York, where the administration sought to highlight the president’s tax policies and affordability agenda.
The visit carries significant political importance because Lawler represents one of only three Republican-held House districts won by former Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris in 2024.
The district is expected to become one of the most heavily contested races in the nation this November.
White House Pushes Economic Message
The White House said Trump’s appearance would focus heavily on promoting last year’s tax legislation, particularly changes to the state and local tax deduction known as SALT.
White House spokesperson Liz Huston said Trump planned to emphasize “his strong record of making life more affordable for working families.”
The administration also aimed to contrast Trump’s economic agenda with congressional Democrats who opposed the tax package.
The appearance comes at a difficult political moment for the president on economic issues.
A new AP-NORC poll found only about one-third of Americans approve of Trump’s handling of the economy, down from approximately 40% at the start of his second term.
Inflation concerns remain elevated, especially after gasoline prices surged this year amid the ongoing Iran conflict.
SALT Deduction Central to New York Campaign Message
A major focus of Friday’s event involved Trump’s expansion of the SALT deduction cap.
Trump originally imposed a $10,000 cap on state and local tax deductions through the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act.
Last year’s legislation increased the deduction limit to $40,000 following intense negotiations with Republicans from high-tax states like New York.
Lawler became one of the most vocal advocates for expanding the deduction.
During the week, he wore a red baseball cap labeled “Mr. SALT” while discussing the policy with reporters at the White House congressional picnic.
“My constituents were seeing anywhere from $5,000 to $20,000 refund checks, which is pretty massive,” Lawler said.
According to White House data, the average New York taxpayer refund increased to more than $3,800 under the revised law.
Lawler Embraces Trump Despite Political Risks
Unlike some vulnerable Republicans distancing themselves from Trump, Lawler has chosen to closely align himself with the president.
Nebraska Republican Don Bacon is retiring, while Pennsylvania Republican Brian Fitzpatrick has occasionally criticized Trump administration policies.
Lawler, however, believes embracing Trump energizes Republican voters while still allowing him to appeal to moderates.
“Look, the people who hate the president — and that’s their sole basis for their vote — are likely never voting for me,” Lawler said.
“Moreover, I have a record in my district that is one I’m very proud of, and a record that appeals to a broad middle.”
Lawler added that he remains confident in winning reelection “on my own merits and my own record.”
Democrats Attack Trump’s Economic Record
Democrats immediately criticized Trump’s appearance and economic message.
Riya Vashi, spokesperson for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committeeargued Trump’s economic policies are hurting working families.
“Nothing says ‘I don’t understand my district’ quite like Mike Lawler bringing Donald Trump to NY-17 to tout a disastrous economy,” Vashi said.
Democrats continue focusing heavily on inflation, rising energy costs, and broader economic frustrations as they attempt to regain control of the House of Representatives.
Five Democratic candidates are currently competing in the primary race to challenge Lawler in the general election.
The Democratic primary is scheduled for June 23.
Republicans Believe Trump Helps in Swing Districts
National Republican Congressional Committee Chairman Richard Hudson defended Trump’s involvement in competitive races.
Hudson said Republican polling suggests Trump remains politically helpful in districts like Lawler’s.
“His poll numbers are pretty good in Lawler’s district,” Hudson said.
“Democratic numbers are tanking.”
Republicans increasingly believe issues like taxes, immigration, and inflation may still provide favorable midterm messaging opportunities despite concerns surrounding Trump’s national approval ratings.
Trump Endorsed Lawler Amid Governor Speculation
Trump formally endorsed Lawler last year at a time when the congressman was considering a possible run for governor of New York.
