New Delhi: A reportedly heated phone conversation between US President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has revealed widening disagreements over Washington’s latest diplomatic outreach to Iran. According to an Axios report, the exchange became emotionally charged as both leaders discussed ongoing mediation efforts aimed at reviving negotiations with Tehran.
Sources familiar with the conversation claimed Netanyahu was deeply frustrated following the call. One insider reportedly described the Israeli leader’s reaction by saying his “hair was on fire,” underscoring the intensity of the discussion and Israel’s concerns over possible concessions to Iran.
International Mediation Efforts Gain Momentum
The development comes as several countries, including Qatar, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Egypt, continue behind-the-scenes efforts to bridge gaps between the United States and Iran. Diplomats are reportedly working on a revised proposal intended to revive structured talks and reduce tensions surrounding Tehran’s nuclear activities.
The updated framework is believed to include stricter commitments from Iran regarding its nuclear programme. It also reportedly outlines conditions linked to the release of frozen Iranian assets, a key demand from Tehran in previous rounds of negotiations.
Trump Keeps Diplomatic Door Open
Despite maintaining pressure on Iran, Trump has reportedly indicated that he remains willing to pursue a negotiated settlement. However, he also warned that military action remains an option if diplomatic efforts collapse.
Speaking at the Coast Guard Academy on Wednesday, Trump said the situation could move in either direction. He suggested that the coming period would determine whether Iran agrees to a deal or faces stronger action. Later, he described the overall situation as being “on the borderline” between diplomatic progress and renewed conflict.
Israel Pushes for Harder Approach
Netanyahu, according to the report, continues to favor a tougher stance focused on targeting Iran’s military and strategic infrastructure. Israel has consistently argued that any agreement with Tehran must include stronger safeguards and stricter enforcement measures.
Meanwhile, Iranian officials confirmed receiving revised proposals from mediators but maintained that meaningful progress would depend on sanctions relief and the unfreezing of Iranian funds. Israeli officials have denied claims regarding discussions with US lawmakers about the private call.
