Deep Look

MAGA Inc. Reports Nearly $277 Million in Spending

President Donald Trump’s political operation is directing hundreds of millions of dollars toward Republican candidates in the closing weeks of the midterm elections, underscoring the party’s struggle to defend its narrow congressional majorities.

New federal campaign finance filings show that MAGA Inc., Trump’s flagship super PAC, reported nearly $277 million in spending since the beginning of September.

The figure includes substantial transfers to affiliated organizations: $200 million to No Going Back PAC Inc. and $25 million to Safety & Affordability PAC Inc.

Those transfers are part of the reported total, rather than additional spending on top of it.

“It’s more than any president has ever spent, by far, on the midterms,” said Republican strategist Corry Bliss, who led the Congressional Leadership Fund during the 2018 campaign.

Republican Challenges Increase Pressure on Trump

Trump faced intense pressure to commit resources as Republicans worked to hold their slim House and Senate majorities.

The president’s party typically loses seats in midterm elections. This year, Republicans also face voter frustration over persistently high costs and the unpopular war with Iran, alongside Trump’s low approval ratings.

Trump’s role in helping defeat several longtime Republican incumbents has added to the party’s difficulties.

Republicans nevertheless retain a substantial financial advantage over Democrats, supported in part by billionaire donors such as Elon Musk.

Advertising Blitz Includes Major Texas Senate Investment

Three Trump-affiliated groups required to disclose their donors have spent more than $256 million on advertising, according to AdImpact’s tracking of media spending and reservations.

That advertising figure measures a different category from MAGA Inc.’s federal spending disclosures and should not be added to the nearly $277 million total.

The campaign includes tens of millions of dollars in Texas supporting Republican Senate candidate Ken Paxton against Democrat James Talarico.

Musk has separately invested heavily in the state, prompting Talarico to accuse him of trying to buy the Senate seat.

Late Advertising Purchases Reduce Buying Power

The decision to wait until late in the election cycle to begin advertising has made the Trump network’s campaign more expensive.

With less airtime available, the groups are paying significantly higher rates. Some placements cost more than five times what they would have cost if purchased earlier.

The higher prices mean the large financial commitment buys less advertising than it might have secured earlier in the campaign.

Trump Says Total Effort Will Exceed $400 Million

In a Tuesday Truth Social post, Trump said he intended to spend “over 400 Million Dollars by Election Day.”

He also said $300 million had already gone toward advertising, voter contact, rallies, tele-rallies, turnout programs and efforts he described as preventing voter cheating.

Those figures were Trump’s account of the broader political effort, distinct from the campaign finance filings and advertising totals.

MAGA Inc. Retains Substantial Cash Reserves

MAGA Inc. still had more than $164 million in cash as of Oct. 14, leaving considerable resources available before the Nov. 3 election.

The super PAC began September with nearly $416 million and has continued raising large contributions.

Its billionaire backers include businessperson Diane Hendricks, Blackstone Group CEO Stephen A. Schwarzman and casino magnate Steve Wynn.

The remaining funds give Trump’s political operation room to expand its closing campaign as Republicans seek to preserve control of Congress.
