South Africa and Zimbabwe have already secured direct entry as co-hosts for the 2027 ODI World Cup, while the remaining eight spots are to be determined based on the ICC ODI Rankings. The cut-off date for these rankings has been set as September 30. After the recent series against New Zealand, the West Indies slipped to 10th place with 73 points, while Bangladesh is in a strong position at ninth and Afghanistan at seventh with 90 points. Recently, Afghanistan secured its position in the race with a resounding victory in the second match of the ongoing ODI series against Ireland, officially closing the door for direct entry for the Caribbean team.
This is the third consecutive time in history that such a situation has arisen.
The last few years have been extremely disappointing for the West Indies cricket team. The Caribbean team failed to directly qualify for the 2019 ODI World Cup and had to play in qualifiers to reach the tournament.
