Deep Look
Huntley Leads Ravens to Overtime Victory in Atlanta
ATLANTA — Tyler Huntley delivered a late comeback and an overtime touchdown Sunday night, helping the Baltimore Ravens defeat the Atlanta Falcons 30-23.
Starting in place of injured quarterback Lamar Jackson, Huntley guided Baltimore to a touchdown and tying two-point conversion in the final minute of regulation.
He then scored on a 1-yard quarterback sneak in overtime before safety Kyle Hamilton intercepted Atlanta’s final possession.
“There’s not a locker room in the NFL that has more confidence in their backup quarterback than we have in Snoop,” Ravens coach Jesse Minter said.
Hamilton echoed that confidence in Huntley, whose nickname is Snoop.
“When Snoop gets a chance to go out there, it’s a Snoop game. It’s not a backup quarterback, and he’s done it so any times. It’s a blessing to have him.”
Baltimore Moves Into First Place in AFC North
The Ravens improved to 4-1 and claimed sole possession of the AFC North lead.
Derrick Henry rushed for 102 yards against the Falcons’ top-ranked run defense, contributing to a victory Minter hoped would build momentum.
“If we let it be, this can be a launching point for us to really get this thing rolling,” Minter said.
Huntley finished 24 of 32 for 201 passing yards and two touchdowns.
Jackson, sidelined by an ankle injury, watched and encouraged his teammates from the sideline in street clothes.
Walker Touchdown and Henry Conversion Force Overtime
Baltimore trailed 23-15 before Huntley found Devontez Walker for a 7-yard touchdown with 40 seconds left in regulation.
The scoring pass targeted backup cornerback Mike Ford, who had entered after Mike Hughes was injured on the preceding play.
Henry then took a direct snap and ran left for the two-point conversion that tied the score.
Earlier in the fourth quarter, Atlanta safety Xavier Watts had broken up a third-down pass to Mark Andrews with a hard hit, forcing Baltimore to punt with 6:28 remaining.
The Ravens nevertheless found a way to complete their comeback.
Huntley Scores Winner Before Hamilton Ends Game
Huntley’s second-down sneak from the 1-yard line put Baltimore ahead in overtime.
“I was just doing my job,” Huntley said. “Once you get in the end zone you give off an ”Ah!” and I was ready to get on the sideline and cheer our defense on.”
Atlanta turned to Tua Tagovailoa after Michael Penix Jr. suffered a rib injury late in the fourth quarter.
Tagovailoa’s pass intended for Drake London was intercepted by Hamilton, ending the game.
“We didn’t do enough to win the game,” Falcons coach Kevin Stefanski said.
Penix had recovered from a slow start to throw for 240 yards and a touchdown, but watched the finish from the bench with a towel over his head.
Atlanta Homecoming Makes Hamilton’s Interception Special
Hamilton grew up in Atlanta and attended Marist School.
A sizable contingent of Ravens supporters attended the game at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, including many people there to support him.
“I probably know 500 people or something in the stadium right now,” Hamilton said. “It was a pretty special moment.”
Falcons Build Early Lead With Defensive Touchdown
Atlanta struck first when Jessie Bates III returned a recovered fumble 36 yards for a touchdown.
Safety Sydney Brown forced the turnover by knocking the ball loose from Andrews.
Penix began 0 for 4 across Atlanta’s first three possessions before finding a rhythm.
A screen pass to Kyle Pitts helped get him going. Penix then completed all five passes on a touchdown drive, including a 25-yard gain to London and a 36-yard completion to Jahan Dotson that reached Baltimore’s 6-yard line.
He finished the possession with a 5-yard touchdown pass to Pitts, Atlanta’s only offensive touchdown.
Bijan Robinson rushed for 86 yards.
Ravens Turn Field Goals Into Second-Half Momentum
Baltimore moved the ball effectively during much of the first half but settled for three Tyler Loop field goals, from 21, 51 and 51 yards.
Atlanta led 14-9 at halftime.
The Ravens opened the second half with a drive featuring Justice Hill’s 47-yard run.
Huntley then connected with Henry for an 18-yard touchdown, cutting Atlanta’s advantage to 17-15. A two-point pass intended for Andrews fell incomplete.
Jake Matthews Nearly Scores During Milestone Start
Falcons left tackle Jake Matthews made his 200th consecutive start, extending the NFL’s longest active streak.
The son of Hall of Fame offensive lineman Bruce Matthews nearly marked the occasion with a touchdown.
Lining up as an eligible receiver on second down from Baltimore’s 5-yard line in the third quarter, Matthews slipped into the end zone uncovered.
Penix’s pass forced him to jump. Matthews touched the ball with both hands, but the throw was too high to secure.
Injuries Affect Both Teams
Baltimore starting right guard Andrew Vorhees was inactive with a foot injury, giving Emery Jones Jr. his first career start.
Rookie tight end Matt Hibner left in the first half with a hand injury but returned during the third quarter.
Defensive linemen Broderick Washington, who suffered an ankle injury, and Travis Jones left in the fourth quarter.
For Atlanta, Penix predicted he would return the following week despite his rib injury.
Cornerback C.J. Henderson was listed as questionable with a groin injury during the third quarter. Matthews played after entering the game with a questionable designation because of a groin issue.
Ravens Visit Cleveland as Falcons Prepare for Chicago
Baltimore travels to Cleveland next Sunday.
Atlanta will host Chicago as it seeks to rebound from the overtime defeat.
