IPL 2026: Mistakes in umpiring are causing the biggest damage to the reputation of a top league!

Delhi: Lots of scores of 200+ are being made; Most matches not ending on time; Most of those who were bought at huge prices in the auction are not able to recover the money from their franchises; Incorrect scheduling and similarly poor standards of umpiring remain the hallmark of IPL 2026. Couldn’t understand why umpiring should be bad. Whatever be the event, poor quality umpiring in it does not bring respect to its level at all. There is no reason why the standard of umpiring cannot be improved but year after year the reputation of IPL in this matter is continuously declining.

In this context, the situation has now become so bad (or out of control) that Lalit Modi, who was praised for starting the IPL, had to tweet: When IPL was started in 2008, it was decided that we will never leave three parameters in its running and one of them was better umpiring. That’s why at the beginning of IPL, they used to take help from ICC to appoint umpires. Still don’t know why, BCCI has stopped taking help from ICC in umpiring in recent years. Better umpiring has been replaced by recruiting umpires for the tournament and the result is that in recent years neither the world’s top umpires have come to perform duty in it and on the other hand the number of mistakes is continuously increasing. The world’s biggest cricket league, despite having all the latest technology, has been rocked by umpiring mistakes.

There have been many mistakes in umpiring this season, but for example, note some special ones:

* In Chennai Super Kings’ first win, Delhi Capitals’ anger with the umpire reached such an extent that their coach Hemang Badani, batsman Nitish Rana and Karun Nair were seen arguing with the officials during the penultimate over of their failed chase. The point of controversy at the Chidambaram Stadium was Tristan Stubbs not being allowed to change his gloves. After this argument, Stubbs was out on the very next ball and from there the Delhi team’s efforts to win were derailed. When Delhi needed 29 runs from 10 balls, Stubbs signaled to change the gloves. Permission was not granted and instead the atmosphere became heated due to mutual debate.

* Phil Salt of Royal Challengers Bangalore caught Heinrich Klaasen of Sunrisers Hyderabad on the boundary rope. There was a dispute on this.

* The Kolkata Knight Riders-Lucknow Super Giants match at Eden Gardens became a cesspool of umpiring mistakes. Opener Finn Allen was sent to the pavilion by third umpire KN Anantha Padmanabhan for a bad decision, however, Digvesh Rathi was seen touching the boundary rope while taking a catch at deep third man. Realizing his mistake, he quickly turned back from the rope to take the catch. Initially it seemed that it was a clean catch. A hasty decision was taken and Allen was declared out on review. This means, what would have been a 6, became a dot ball and a wicket for KKR.

* Against Kolkata Knight Riders, Hyderabad’s Varun Chakraborty took a difficult catch at deep square leg off Abhishek Sharma (48), which was sent on referral but the third umpire was not shown the replay from the right angle to change the decision taken on the ground.

* In the match against Hyderabad’s Lucknow Super Giants, when 1 run was needed from 2 balls, Rishabh Pant hit a boundary on Jaydev Unadkat’s ball and gave his team the first win, but the drama happened that when the ball was near the dugout from the shot, Lucknow’s pacer Avesh Khan hit the ball back on the ground with his bat even before it crossed the boundary. Lucknow team could have been penalized for this but the umpire ignored it.

* Third umpire Rohan Pandit was hasty in giving ‘Obstructing the Field’ out to Angkrish Raghuvanshi.

These are just a few examples but there are enough indications to accept that the umpire is not performing his role properly and such mistakes are also being made which directly affect the outcome of the match. Will BCCI accept this mistake? Every resourceful BCCI is not able to arrange better umpires for IPL.
