Uniform Civil Code will be implemented in Assam, Cabinet approved, tribal population gets complete exemption
Guwahati. The Assam Cabinet on Wednesday approved the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in the state. However, tribals will be kept out of its scope. Chief Minister Himanta Vishwa Sharma gave this information. The UCC Bill will be introduced in the new Assembly on May 26, the Chief Minister said at a press conference here after chairing the first Cabinet meeting of his government’s second term.
“This is an important decision taken in the first meeting of the Cabinet and is in line with the promise we made during the elections,” he said. Sharma said Uttarakhand, Goa and Gujarat have already implemented the UCC, but his government has tailored it to the needs of Assam.
“We have completely kept the tribal population out of the purview of UCC,” he said. All customs, traditions and practices followed by the people of Assam are outside the scope of the UCC.” Sharma said the UCC will regulate matters related to inheritance, marriage, live-in relationship and compulsory registration of marriage and divorce.
