Union Cabinet approves proposal to increase the number of Supreme Court judges to 38
Bureau Prayagraj- In a significant development, the Union Cabinet approved the proposal to introduce a bill to increase the number of judges in the Supreme Court from 33 (except the Chief Justice of India (CJI)) to 38 (except the CJI). This bill, ‘Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Amendment Bill, 2026’, will amend the Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Act, 1956.
In the year 2019, the number of judges in the Supreme Court was increased from 31 to 33 (except CJI). This proposed step is being taken in view of the pending cases. Considering the possibility of more than four judges retiring this year, the introduction of this bill will provide some relief in the workload.
