The Uttar Pradesh Cabinet has approved setting up of ESIC Medical College in Varanasi and ESIC Hospital of 100 beds each in Moradabad and Gorakhpur. These projects will provide better health facilities to lakhs of insured workers and their families.

Lucknow: The Uttar Pradesh government has taken a big decision towards expanding the health services of the Employees’ State Insurance Corporation (ESIC). The Cabinet has approved the proposal to provide land for setting up ESIC Medical College in Varanasi and 100-bed hospitals in Moradabad and Gorakhpur. These projects will be constructed with the cooperation of the Central Government.

ESIC Medical College will be built in Varanasi

Uttar Pradesh Cabinet has approved the allotment of land for the establishment of ESIC Medical College in Varanasi. This medical college will be established in village Pindra of Pindra tehsil. According to the government, out of the total 17.563 hectares of land, about 13 acres of land will be provided free of cost to the Employees’ State Insurance Corporation (ESIC). The already operating ESIC hospital here will be expanded and given the form of a medical college.

The project is estimated to cost around Rs 800 crore. After starting the medical college, MBBS studies will also be conducted here. According to the government, most of the seats will be available for students from Uttar Pradesh, while provision of 50 percent reservation will be made for the children of insured employees. There are also plans to start nursing and paramedical courses here in future.

Lakhs of workers will get direct benefits

The government says that with the opening of this medical college, about 1.45 lakh ESIC card holder workers and about 5.50 lakh of their dependents of Varanasi and surrounding areas will be able to get better health services. Besides, new employment opportunities will also be created in the medical education and health sector. This is also expected to strengthen the medical system of Purvanchal region.

Labor Minister Anil Rajbhar said that the objective of these projects is to provide quality treatment to the insured workers and their families in their own areas, so that they do not have to go to big cities.

Hospitals with 100 beds each will be built in Moradabad and Gorakhpur.

The Cabinet has also approved the proposal to set up ESIC hospitals of 100 beds each in Moradabad and Gorakhpur. About 2.025 hectares of government land will be made available free of cost for the construction of the hospital in Harthala village of Moradabad. This hospital will provide treatment facilities to more than 93 thousand insured workers of the district and more than 3.55 lakh of their dependents.

The hospital will be built on about 5.249 acres of land in the institutional area of Gida Sector-9 in Gorakhpur. For this, land will be made available at a concessional rate instead of market price, which will reduce the cost of the project and the construction work can be completed faster.

Employment opportunities will increase with health services

The state government believes that the commencement of these three projects will not only expand health services but will also create a large number of direct and indirect employment opportunities in the medical, nursing, technical and administrative sectors. With this, lakhs of people of Varanasi, Moradabad, Gorakhpur and surrounding districts will be able to get better treatment facilities in their own area.

According to the government, the further process towards starting these projects soon will be completed in coordination with the Center and the State. After the construction of these institutions, the network of ESIC health services in the state will be further strengthened and the insured workers will be able to get the benefit of modern medical facilities.
