Who is DGP and what are his responsibilities?

DGP i.e. Director General of Police is the highest officer of any state police force. In Hindi it is called Director General of Police. What is the qualification required to become DGP?

The first step to become a DGP is selection in the Indian Police Service (IPS). For this the candidate has to pass the Civil Services Examination conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC). After success in the examination the candidate is allotted IPS cadre and sent for training.

After completion of training, the officer’s career progresses through various posts. With promotion both his responsibilities and authority increase.

Career path from IPS to DGP

An IPS officer usually rises through the following ranks to reach DGP:

  • Additional Director General of Police (ADG)

How much time does it take to become DGP?
